Taylor stood outside Travis's house, her heart pounding in her chest. She had only been here once before, but today felt different. After their playful conversation that morning, she had decided to surprise him, maybe to continue the teasing or just to see him again in person. Whatever the reason, she found herself walking up to his front door, feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness.
As she approached the door, she hesitated for a moment. What if he wasn't home? Or worse, what if he didn't want to see her? She shook her head, trying to push away the doubts. "You're overthinking again," she muttered to herself, taking a deep breath before knocking.
The sound of footsteps on the other side of the door made her heart race even faster. The door swung open, revealing a tall man with a stern expression. He looked at her with narrowed eyes, his gaze cold and unwelcoming.
It was Travis's father, she assumed.
He stared at Taylor with a look that made her instantly feel small, as though she were intruding on some sacred ground. "Who are you?" His voice was sharp, almost accusatory.
Taylor felt her confidence waver. She had been so excited to surprise Travis, but now she wasn't sure if she had made the right decision. "Uh, I'm Taylor," she stammered, her voice barely above a whisper. "I'm... a friend of Travis."
Ed's eyes narrowed, scanning her from head to toe as if assessing whether she was worth his time. The scrutiny made Taylor's skin prickle with discomfort. She tried to maintain eye contact, but his cold demeanor made it difficult.
"A friend, huh?" Ed's tone was dripping with disdain, as though the very idea of Travis having a female friend was preposterous. He crossed his arms, his posture rigid and unwelcoming. "What kind of friend just shows up unannounced?"
Taylor swallowed hard, feeling the weight of his judgment. She hadn't expected this level of hostility. "I... I just wanted to surprise him. I didn't mean to—"
"Surprise him?" Ed interrupted, his voice mocking. "You think you can just waltz into my house, surprise my son, and everything will be just fine?"
The hostility in his tone made Taylor feel like she had committed a grave offense. Her mind raced for a way to defuse the situation, but the words wouldn't come. She felt a sudden wave of dizziness, the stress of the situation exacerbating the remnants of her hangover. Her vision blurred slightly, and she reached out to steady herself against the doorframe.
Just as she was about to say something, she heard a familiar voice from behind Ed. "Dad, who's at the door?" Travis appeared in the hallway, his expression shifting from confusion to shock as he saw Taylor standing there, looking pale and unsteady.
"Taylor?" His voice was filled with concern as he quickly moved past his father to get to her. "What's going on? Are you okay?"
Taylor tried to force a smile, but it wavered, betraying her unease. "I... I just wanted to see you."
Travis's concern deepened as he noticed how shaken she seemed. He turned to his father, his voice edged with irritation. "Dad, why are you acting like this? Don't treat her like that."
Ed's expression hardened further. "She shouldn't just show up at our door unannounced. You know the rules, Travis. No visitors without my permission, besides you don't need some girl—"
"Stop it," Travis snapped, his voice firm. "Taylor's not 'some girl.' She's important to me, and if she wants to visit, she's welcome here, and you didn't have to be rude to her."
