The excitement of a beach day had been palpable among Taylor's friends. They buzzed with energy as they discussed plans and loaded their bags with sunscreen and towels. Taylor had initially agreed to join them, but deep down, she had only been looking forward to the day because Travis was supposed to be there. With him now unable to join, her enthusiasm had evaporated.
Selena and Abigail, noticing her lack of excitement, tried to coax her into coming along. "Come on, Taylor. It'll be fun! We can all use a day in the sun," Selena urged, her tone cheerful.
Abigail nodded in agreement. "Yeah, it'll be a blast! You should come with us. You might change your mind once you're there."
Taylor forced a smile, but it didn't quite reach her eyes. "I don't know. I'm really not feeling it today," she said, trying to sound casual but failing to hide her disappointment. "Maybe next time."
Selena and Abigail exchanged glances, concern etched on their faces. "Are you sure?" Abigail asked softly. "It's going to be great, and we'd love to have you with us."
Taylor shook her head, her resolve firm. "No, it's okay. You guys go ahead. I'll be fine here."
With some reluctance, her friends finally agreed to go without her, promising to text her pictures and keep her updated. As they left, Taylor waved them off with a forced smile, her heart heavy with the weight of missed opportunity and unspoken feelings.
The house fell into an almost eerie quiet after they departed. Taylor moved about the house in a daze, tidying up the remnants of last night's party with mechanical movements. The emptiness of the house seemed to echo her own feelings of loneliness. She picked up empty cups and leftover snacks, the mundane tasks doing little to lift her spirits.
Eventually, she found herself in her room, the door closed behind her as if to shut out the world. She lay down on her bed, staring at the ceiling, her thoughts drifting to Travis. Her mind replayed the moments they'd shared, the closeness, the connection, and the way he'd made her feel.
Grabbing her phone from the bedside table, she hesitated for a moment before typing out a message. Her fingers hovered over the keyboard, and she took a deep breath before hitting send.
"Hey, how's everything going?" she texted, her heart pounding with anticipation.
It wasn't long before Travis's reply came through. "It's okay," he typed back, his words tinged with the heaviness of their earlier conversation. "How's the beach?"
Taylor's fingers moved quickly over the screen as she responded. "I didn't feel like going. I stayed home."
Travis's frown deepened as he read her message. An unexpected sense of relief washed over him. The thought that Taylor wasn't at the beach, that she had stayed behind, oddly comforted him. It made him feel less alone in his predicament, less like he was missing out on something important.
"Sorry to hear that," Travis typed back, his fingers hovering over the keyboard. "But I'm kind of relieved, in a way. I was really looking forward to seeing you."
Taylor's heart skipped a beat at his words. She felt a blush creep up her cheeks as she read his message. The warmth of his words was a welcome balm to her loneliness. She quickly typed back, her curiosity piqued.
"Yeah, I'm sorry too. I was looking forward to it, especially because you were going to be there. Maybe next time we can hang out together. What do you think?"
Travis hesitated for a moment before responding. "Definitely. I'd like that."
Taylor's fingers hovered over the keyboard as she crafted her response. The idea of spending time with Travis had taken root in her mind, and she couldn't shake the feeling that now was the perfect opportunity. She quickly typed, her curiosity evident in her words.
