Onalerona's POV
"Tlang gape." asks dad. (come again.) "I'm pregnant papa." I answer. My stepmom gives my hand a gentle squeeze. "Tsweetswee mpolelele gore seno ke motlae fela o o sa siamang." (please tell me this is some sick joke.) "No papa." I lift my sweatshirt and he sighs. "Onalerona how can you do such a reckless thing and fall pregnant. You not even married for heavens sakes but you busy spreading your legs."
"Ke maswabi papa ga ke a e rulaganya." I say. (i'm sorry papa I didn't plan it.) "So you and your boyfriend just have sex without protection and hope that you don't fall pregnant. How can you be so stupid and reckless Onalerona?" he says. "Ke kopa gore o ritibale papa." says Obakeng. (papa please calm down.)
"O se ka wa mpolelela gore ke ritibale. Kgaitsadio o imile a sa nyalwa mme o lebeletse gore ke mo ope diatla. O tshwanetse go itsise gore o bone tiro e seng gore o imile." says dad. (don't tell me to calm down your sister just fell pregnant out of wedlock and you expect me to be understanding and clap hands for her. She is supposed to make an announcement that she found a job not that she's pregnant.)
"Mme go mo goeletsa ga go kitla go fatola sepe." says mom. (but you shouting at her won't change anything.) "Rraagwe ngwana o kae?" asks dad. (where is the father of the child?) "O teng, o bolelela le ba lelapa la gagwe mme o tla direla ngwana wa gagwe se se siameng." I answer. (he is there, his telling his family too and will do right for the child.)
"Ke mang yo a go tlogelang?" he asks. (who is he leaving you for?) "O raya jang fa o re papa?" I ask. (what do you mean by that papa?) "A o akanya gore o tla fetoga motshine wa gagwe wa go dira bana. O tla nyala mosimane yono." (do you think you will just become his baby making machine. you will get married to this boy.) "Ga re kitla nyalana gone jaanong go sa le gale." he scoffs. (we won't get married now its too soon.)
"Mme e ne e ise e nne bako ya gore o phutholole maoto a gago." he asks. (but it wasn't to soon to spread your legs.) "Hai pap seo ga se tlhokege." says mom. (hai papa that's uncalled for.) "O se ka wa bua matlakala a a ntseng jalo le nna." (don't tell me such bullshit.) I knew my dad was going to be angry that I am pregnant but I didn't think he would be this angry. Now I'm scared to tell him that Nkosikhona is married.
If this is his reaction to the pregnancy how much worse will his reaction be when he finds out that its an affair. He walks away leaving us in awkward silence. This is not how I planned things to go. "Ke a lo akgola." says Olebogang and I smile. (congratulations.) "Ke a leboga." I say and she hugs me. (thank you.)
She breaks the hug and sits down. "Have you told them about your first baby?" he asks. "What baby?" asks mom. "Ke ne ka senyegelwa ke mpa fa ke ne ke le mo setlhopheng sa yunibesithi mme ga ke a ka ka bolelela ope. E tswa mo go ene monna yoo" I answer. (I had a miscarriage back in varsity but i didn't tell anyone. Its from the same guy.) "You guys have been dating since varsity."
"Ke tla go tlhalosetsa sengwe le sengwe fa ke go tlhalosetsa kamano yotlhe ya rona." I say and she hums. (i will explain when i explain the whole relationship.) "I'm sorry that you lost your baby. this is your rainbow baby and this shows that God didn't forget you my child." she says and I let out a little smile. "He really didn't."
"A ke tshwanetse go ja?" she asks and we nod. (should i dish up?) "Mma ke yo go leletsa rre." I say as i stand up which is a bit of a hassle because these couches are quite low. (let me go call dad.) I walk to his bedroom and knock on the door. I hear a come in and I go in. "Get out Onalerona." "Dinner is ready come and eat."
