Harlan had estimated that Parker was twenty weeks along which meant she was just over halfway through her pregnancy. Upon hearing that one of the two was a boy, Parker looked at Daryl with an expression of euphoria on her face. "Ha! One of them heard me." Back at the RV, Maggie and Parker exchanged ultrasound pictures.
"Is that two?" She asked, squinting at the picture held in her hands.
"Are my eyes playing tricks on me or are you two having twins?" Glenn asked, looking over the picture Maggie held.
"A boy and a girl," Parker answered with a laugh. She and Daryl sat across from Glenn and Maggie. Daryl had an arm around her shoulders, remembering his conversation with Abraham earlier that day in the Barrington House after Gregory had ushered them all away.
"So... you and Rick's sister," Abraham started after their awkward silence from their original conversation about Rick and Michonne. "The pair of you have been together for a while?"
"Yeah," Daryl nodded, staring out the window. "It's been a while."
"And now you're having a baby?" Abraham continued.
"Yeah."
"Tell me, when you were pouring the bisquick," Abraham said slowly, sounding unsure. "Were you trying to make pancakes?" Daryl had to think about his words for a moment, before realizing what Abraham was implying.
"Yeah..?" He posed his response as a question, his eyebrows slightly furrowed in confusion.
"Will, I have to admit, I admire you," Abraham told him, sitting down in a recliner. "I never thought about settling down during all this shit, but it seems like you have the best of both worlds."
"What?" Daryl asked, growing more confused as the conversation went on.
"You got yourself a good woman who seems to love you more than life itself, waiting for you at home every time you go out," Abraham explained with a sigh. "You can do what you like and come home to a warm bed and a nice view." Daryl nodded along as he spoke.
"Yeah," He muttered for the fourth time.
"And are you sure you're ready to bring a baby into this world?" He hadn't answered Abraham's last question because the question had completely caught him off guard. And he saw Parker walking down the stairs so he wanted nothing more than to end the conversation there. But now, looking at the ultrasound photos of his and Parker's son and daughter, he knew he was ready and that it was what he wanted. Sure, the world was dangerous and yes, Daryl wasn't sure he was ready to be a father, but things would work themselves into place as time passed. And when Parker tucked closer into his side with a quiet yet content sigh, her eyes struggling to stay open, he knew he would do whatever it took to protect his family.
He wouldn't let his kids grow up without a father. He'd make sure he's a part of their lives and love them both the way they deserved to be loved. He'd show them the world as it is now. He envied them because they'd get to grow up living this life as if it were normal, without knowing the luxuries that they could no longer have. Television, safety, music. Staring at the photos in his hands with a smile on his face, Daryl knew he would do absolutely anything for his kids. He made it possible. He brought himself a happiness he never thought he could.
"Are you happy that you're having twins?" Glenn smiled at Daryl's expression.
"Yeah," He nodded. "I wanted a girl. But one of each is better." He set the photos down, knowing Parker probably planned on adding them to her scrapbook filled with pictures. "You're the godfather, right?"
