A Crumbling Society

Part 3-2

No answer, and for good reason but I was still dumbfounded about the entire operation. Another knock but this time it exceeded the length of the first, putting in ten total hits against the door. Refusing to give myself away I put my weight in my stance and kept quiet. Exchanging of words began in muted intervals like they were speaking amongst one another personally. Something along the lines of, "okay get the ram", and "wait", but the other voice refused to do so. Briefly talking to a third body the second one had returned asking the surrounding enforcers for assistance. Pulling back the ram before placing every ounce of force they contained into beating the door. It caused an echo within the apartment, and I did not flinch at all, if they get in, I'm going to stop them. Retracting the ram from contact they tried once again to attempt knocking down my door and then one of them called out "hold". The pad on the first man's arm began beeping and he inspected whatever it was that was displayed. "The reading disappeared, the hero is gone, we must have scared him off conducting our search", he told the group. Mentioning that the signal conveyed the departure toward the city he suggested they leave and follow their pursuit. Responses agreed in unison that they head out and soon began abandoning their position one by one. Without budging, I held my form ready to strike just in case they came back or decided otherwise. The last man trailed off back to the stairway and I kept a fix on them until they had officially parted ways from the complex. Statements of confusion and curiosity stirred together in my mind as I tried piecing together what in the hell that really was. If they had attempted to get the door down, then my force field would have constituted other means of my protection. Death would have been certain for each of them and then a fight against the others would have led to more exposure. The Society would have shown up themselves to take me on and not enforcers, but they were tracking a hero. If the information they had was true, then I would have sensed it and that would have ended differently on another note. It does tell me that there are heroes still out there which might have a positive or negative look depending what side you're on. Using my powers to reach again I tried to find any hero wandering the city with bland results. Interesting that they're trying to find someone that isn't there, but why is the question to be asked. Looking at it from a separate angle, it could be nothing and since they left, I shouldn't worry about it. Tomorrow is the day I hunt down the woman that killed my best friend, the day she gets what she deserves. Other things were more important, so I enticed my mind to the latter and thought nothing else of what just happened.

Hours went by and I kept all my attention in watching the news so that I could assure she would still be at her meeting. Felle city was actually celebrating the arrival of a villain which caused me to snicker, but I know it's out of fright. Coverage showed that other villains will be there as security detail and a group of Enforcers. Thankfully it wasn't a rally, or I'd have others to deal with in getting out of the way before getting to my target. A building containing large wooden accents and brass details was shown as the place of the meeting. Possibly being connected to a university or a hospital by the look of it but unconfirmed. Additional storytelling explained topics such as how the numbers looked for her and the president's team. Without having to establish my own thought it already came across like they were going to win. Interviews were being shown and they had Dark Matrix speak a few times, correcting her words and smirking here and there. She didn't care one bit about a single innocent person, only about how much power they were coming into with lying to the world. In realization on something I hadn't thought of before, I didn't even know her real name. Her being a villain was about it for all things Dark Matrix in my book. Aside from demons I'm usually thorough on villains and other beings but with her there's not much. Other members of The Society I could get into specifics about, but I wonder if she got rid of anything about her with her abilities. It would make the most sense if that's the truth, but she's been wreaking havoc for a while now. The news said it was going to shut off in an hour and it was only ten O'clock, there must be a curfew for broadcasting as well. Transitioning from her to other random things I went ahead and cut the panel off, I was no longer interested. Taking the time to explore the happenings around the world was nice, I now know the world is in more shit than when I was here last. Resting was also my choice because everything had been like a bullet train lately. With these new powers I hardly exhausted any energy while casting but I was taught to take time to recharge. There's no amount of power to keep you from using up all your magic, and if that happens then you become vulnerable in battle. Many notorious mages have died from such circumstances, and I definitely won't be one of them.
