Carter
One of the workers announces that the dinner is served and dad and Lincoln get up from their seats on the sofa, motioning for me and Abigail to follow them.
We sit and I look at the girl. Did she not like my teddy bear? My mom gave it to me when I was scared and told me to always hold it, I don't need it anymore. I'm not scared of anything, I already lost one of the most important people in my life so I wanted to give it to her. Maybe if she has it then she won't be scared anymore.
I heard my dad talking on the phone with uncle Lincoln, I know I shouldn't have eavesdropped on them but when they started talking about Abigail, I froze and couldn't move. I want to talk to her.
I wonder what she feels about her mother not being here anymore. She looks okay, she even smiled several times. Maybe I will smile too, though, I doubt it because I can't smile knowing I will never see my mom again.
"Eat Carter." My dad nudges me and I pick up my fork.
"So, Abigail Lincoln told me you're starting school next week." My dad asks.
Is she going to the same school as me? I hope so.
"Yes." She replied quietly and kept on eating. "She's going to the local school in my neighborhood." Lincoln explained and I sighed in disappointment. So she won't be in the same school as me.
I go to a private school where only rich kids go. So it's not a surprise that she's not going there, dad told me uncle Lincoln didn't like this kind of lifestyle and preferred to live by his own salary.
I rolled my eyes at that. Why should he have to suffer like that, when he can live like us? It doesn't make sense. I'm glad I'm the only heir to my dad's business. I'm already learning and when I turn 18 I'm going to take over. After that I will have control over all of our family's money. It will be fun.
My dad asked simple questions to Abigail during the dinner and she mostly answered with yes and nos.
"Carter," my dad looked towards me as he wiped his mouth with napkin. "Why don't you show Abigail around, I have to talk to uncle Lincoln."
I nodded and stood up. Abigail seemed like she was hesitating but after Lincoln nodded his head towards her, she sighed and got up.
Does she think I'll hurt her or anything. Why does she look so afraid? And so tense.
"Come on." I start walking towards my favorite part of the house. Movie theater.
She follows me without a word. "This is my favorite place, my dad mostly works but I don't mind because I can come here and watch literally any movie I want plus I have popcorn, chocolate, ice cream, etc etc. And also Reymond, he treats me like his own son. He's a good man and my friend."
Hearing my voice and talking so much after 6 months of silence was surprising to me.
"Who's Reymond?" Abigail asked watch me with raised eyebrows.
"The butler." I replied and took the remote. "Do you wanna watch anything?"
She shook her head. "Okay, then let's continue." I dropped the remote on one of the chairs and walked out of the room, turning the corner and walking towards my second favorite place.
My mother's garden. She loved flowers so my dad built a whole garden for her. He was cray in love with her. They were childhood sweethearts and they knew from the age of 14 that they were arranged to marry each other.
Abigail smiled looking around. I suppose she loves flowers as well. "Being here reminds me of my mom." I say as I sit on the green legs crossed.
Abigail frowns at my words, "Where is she now?"
So, Lincoln didn't tell her. "She's dead." I tell her and watch as her eyes widen. "I'm so sorry, I didn't know." She looks so guilty and I almost chuckle but I can't and just shake my head. "It's okay."
She looks around for some time until she sits in front of me. "Are you okay?"
I look up at her and raise an eyebrow. "You seemed very talkative before and now you're just sitting so I thought maybe it's because..." She trailed off but I understand what she meant.
"I just miss her." I admit for the first time aloud.
She sighs and pats my shoulder surprising both of us. "I miss my mom too every day."
She smiles sadly as she drops her hand. I stare at her for a while while her eyes dart around the room, meeting anything but my eyes and realize how stupid I am that I haven't noticed how beautiful she is before.
