The boys both come to me and plop down on my lap. I take the bag that is lying on the blanket and give them both their water bottles.
"She looks incredibly like you," says Chris and pokes Aurora's nose, who laughs.
"And Anakin resembles..." He stops talking. Looks at Anakin and he sees it. Anakin is blond and blue-eyed, he could be Chris's son.
"He resembles his father," I say and look Chris firmly in the eyes.
He nods and looks at Jax.
"That's my best friend's son," I say and Jax snuggles up to me. Anakin gets up from my lap and holds onto Chris' shoulder, putting his face close to Chris's. I laugh out loud when Chris is briefly startled.
"I really don't understand a word, buddy." Chris says and Anakin stuffs a pretzel cookie into Chris' mouth.
"I'm sorry." Chris says. I look at him. "I'm sorry... for how I treated you back then."
"Chris..."
"No, please. I was a real asshole. And you don't deserve to be treated like that. Hayden is lucky to have you. I just realized it way too late." He points to my children. "I could have had that with you."
I look away from him to the trees. "You really hurt me back then because... because I really loved you and I imagined a future with you." I say and look away from the trees and at him. "I hope you become a father one day too. You've always wanted that."
Chris smiles sadly and nods.
"It's a great feeling to have children. They can drive you crazy and don't let you sleep in or go to the toilet in peace because you just see them standing in the middle of the bathroom." I laugh, and so does Chris. "But it's a good and nice feeling."
"I believe you," he says and hands me back Aurora, who is sleeping.
"But you still hurt me deeply. Calling me a child and then marrying a woman who is two years older than me." I say, still looking at him.
His smile fades. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to call you a child."
"Bullshit," I say, snorting. "Just say you cheated on me with her, am I right?" When he doesn't reply, that's confirmation for me.
"Why? What did I do to you?" I ask.
"Aleia..."
"No. Just tell Chris." I spit. ,,Tell me the truth because I damn well deserve to know."
"Yes, I cheated on you with her and I'm so sorry. She... was just so different."
I laugh dryly. ,,Different? Fuck you, Chris." I say and get up, put Aurora on the floor and put the two boys in the stroller and Aurora in the baby carrier. Poppy comes to me, I quickly put the leash around her neck and walk away from Chris, who is calling my name.
What an asshole.
How dare he apologize to me and then say she was different.
The whole way home I'm angry at blonde, blue-eyed men.
Men who cheat on their girlfriends and fiancées and wives.
The kids take a nap for half an hour while I do the laundry and
call the pizza delivery company.
I hate men so much right now.
Hate how they think they are better than me and have the right to hurt their wives by cheating on them.
