(Marjorie's pov)
Just as I begin my work, a small girl walks into the office.
"Hi my love. What's your name?" I ask, walking over to her, and crouching down in front of her.
"Ceci." she mumbles out, bringing her thumb up to her mouth, stating to suck on it.
"Well hello Ceci. I'm Marjorie, and that over there is Reece." I introduce myself, and point over to Reece, so she can familiarise herself with the two adults in the room.
"Hey kiddo." he says, moving next to me, kneeling down.
"What are you doing here honey? Shouldn't you be in your nursery room?" I ask, and she shakes her head.
"No. Me want to go home." she says, staring to cry.
"It's okay love." I comfort her, bringing her in for a hug.
Her little arms cling around my neck, holding extremely tight, as she cries into my shoulder.
I can feel my heart breaking a little, and I look to Reece, who nods, before standing up and leaving the room, going to find Char in the toddler room.
(Reece's pov)
"Char?" I walk into the toddler room, greeted by a very distressed Charlotte, and a calmer Sorscha.
"Reece no time!" Char snaps at me, whilst racing around the room.
"Charlie calm down!" Sorscha yells.
"No! We have somehow lost a child!" Char snaps back, poking her head out the door.
"No you haven't." I chime in, and Char stops dead in her tracks, looking back at me.
"Where is she?"
"With Marjorie, sobbing her eyes out." I tell her, and her expression drops, and I can see her visibly break.
"Her parents." she mutters.
"Yes. Please enlighten me."
"Well Ceci was dropped off this morning in tears, by her aunt. She told me that her parents had up and left, and that she was no longer able to stay with her aunt. She was being placed in the system, and there would be a social worker arriving later. Then she left Ceci here." Char explains, and I nod along.
"I see. Well, now that is all cleared up, I can go and sort it out with Marjorie." I say, walking out the room.
I walk back into the office, to find a sleeping child on top of Marjorie, as she is sat on the sofa in the office, gently rocking her.
"Hey baby." I whisper, kissing the side of her head, sitting next to her.
"Hey handsome. She has just fallen asleep. What did Char say?" she asks.
"Ceci's parents left her. There is a social worker coming in this afternoon, to discuss putting her in the system." I explain to her, and her expression softens.
"Poor baby. The system is tough." she says, rubbing up and down her back.
Right on cue, the social worker walks in.
"It is tough." she says.
"I'm sorry? Who are you?" Marjorie asks, standing up.
"The social worker."
"Oh hello." she says, seemingly holding onto the child tighter. I stand up, placing myself in front of her.
"So I'm here to discuss Ceci." she says, opening her folder. "Her parents abandoned her, her aunt can no longer take care of her. Sooo... I'll have to place her in foster care." she explains.
"Can she be adopted?" I ask.
"Yes, she can. Either by a foster family, or someone else."
"Marjorie?" I turn around, looking at her. She nods. "We'll adopt her." I say, and the social worker looks up at me, almost shocked.
"You sure?"
"Certain. She needs a home, not multiple foster families. That is no place for a child to grow up." I say and she nods.
She hands me the adoption papers.
"You always keep those on you?" I question, yet still signing where I need to, before handing it to Marjorie.
"Yes I do."
"Hold her for me babe. I can't sign it one handed." Marjorie says, handing Ceci to me, who stirs a little, but adjusts herself comfortably, settling her head in my shoulder.
Marjorie quickly signs the paper, and hands it back to the social worker.
"All okay?" she asks.
"Yep all looks good. Ceci is now yours. Let me just change her name on the files. What last name are we changing it to?"
"Knight." Marjorie responds.
"Okayyy.... thank you. She is now officially Ceci Knight." she says, before leaving the office.
Marjorie turns around to face me.
"We have a daughter." she says, looking into my eyes, then down to the child in my arms.
"Yes we do." I say back.
Just at that moment, Ceci starts stirring in my arms, then clutching my hoodie with her small fists, before starting to cry.
"Hey it's okay bug." I whisper, rubbing up and down her back, gently bouncing her up and down. "You're alright my little bug."
She seems to sterile back into my arms quietly, and her little fists slowly let go of my hoodie.
"You are a great dad Reece. She settled in your arms instantly." Marjorie says, and I look to her, seeing tears in her eyes.
"Oh baby. It's okay." I reach my free arm out to her face, gently wiping away a few tears that are starting to fall. "You're okay."
"I love you Reece."
"I love you too. What should we do with this little one? Put her back in nursery for the last few hours? Or you take her home?" I question.
"We have to give her a normal sort of routine,
I guess? We are only just working this out. Let's put her back in the toddle room with Char and Sorscha, then I'll go out to the shops, buy a few things, take them home and set up a little room for her." Marjorie suggests.
"Hey, I'll go to the shops. You stay here baby. At least then you can be here if she needs you, she seems to like you." I say, and Marjorie smirks at me.
"You sure? She seems comfy with you?" she giggles out, but holding her arms open, as I pass her Ceci, who starts to properly wake up.
