(Reece's pov)
This is shit. I'm stuck in the office doing paperwork. And it's half an hour after closing. Marjorie is probably waiting for me at home, she was on the early shift today. She's probably going to be waiting a lot longer, I'm nowhere near done for the day. This is shit.
"Reece, everything is done now," Char says, poking her head around the corner of the door.
"Thanks Char," I mumble, my head still engrossed in the paperwork.
"You need any help?" she asks.
"No, you can go home," I mumble again.
"Sure? I don't mind helping, Mia isn't here yet," she says, walking further into the room now.
"I'm sure. You can't really help. It's all the admin sort of stuff. Stuff only higher ups have the info on. But thanks anyway," I explain to her, and see her glance over a few sheets.
"Okay. I'm sorry I can't be much help. Don't stay up too late worrying yourself, it is a Friday after all," she says, gently smiling at me before leaving the room.
Fuck, it's Friday. Mine and Marjorie's 'date night'. It's not really a date night, but it also is. We order in, sit on the sofa and watch a ton of movies. We only do it on a Friday, the rest of the week we have normal dinners, and don't stay up long, before going to bed as we have work the next day. But it's a Friday tradition.
And I'm already 30 minutes late. Fuck.
Just then, my phone buzzes, a message from her.
Marj <3 ~ Hey handsome, is everything okay at work? It's just you're a bit late, and I wanted to know if you are okay. Text me back please, I love you. xxx
She's worrying. She never asks me to text her back, because I normally do. I go to reply, but then a certain redhead catches my eye in the doorway.
"Need help?"
"No Mia, I don't. Go home," I say, putting my phone back down.
"Looks like you do. And before you say, I am a 'higher up', so I can help you. Let someone help," she says, pulling up a chair.
"Don't have much choice do I?"
"Nope, now let's get this done, we both have people needing us to get home," she says, and we sort through the paperwork together, getting it done twice as fast. We are so engrossed in it, neither of us hear my phone going off constantly, either ringing or being blown up by worried texts.
"And that's the last of it. All done in a hour. Thank you Mia, I would've been here for double the time if it weren't for you," I say, gently nudging her shoulder as we both stand.
"What can I say?" she laughs, nudging me back, and all of a sudden, it's like we are teens again, with our old friendship.
"No but really, thank you. It's good to have my best friend back, Amy," I say, softly smiling at her.
"It is nice Reecey," she agrees, and we both laugh, before I pick up my phone and see the missed calls and texts, and my breath catches in my throat, making me choke.
"Choking on thin air?" she laughs.
"I'm in deep shit," I say, showing her the phone screen.
"Oh you really are. Weren't you texting her when I walked in though?"
"I was about to. Then got distracted by you...." I realise I never text back.
"Oh Reecey, you are stupid. You better get home to her, and I'd suggest you make it fast," she laughs about, finding the whole situation hilarious, "Me and Char will lock up, go."
I bolt out the nursery to my car, immediately speeding out the car park.
I'm an actual idiot. How stupid am I? Marjorie's probably worried sick at home, because I never text her back, and the nursery closed almost 2 hours ago.
By the time I'm finished worrying, I'm already pulling up in the driveway. I take a deep breath, knowing this ain't going to be easy, before climbing out the car, and unlocking the front door.
"Where the fuck have you been?!?" Marjorie starts yelling in my face once I have shut the door, poking a finger into my chest.
"I was at work. I was going to message back, and then Mia appeared," I tell her, and see her face go from anger to hurt, then back to anger.
"MIA?!?" she screams.
"Yeah, she came to help me, I was stressed with it all."
"Of course! You needed some way to get out that stress! Of course! Ha! Mia! Not even your wife, but your ex-girlfriend! And Mia nonetheless!" she yells, tears falling, a mix of anger and hurt.
"No Marj. It wasn't like that at all," I reach forward for her, and she backs away. That hurts, normally she turns to me for comfort when she is like this, instead she is backing away from me.
"Yeah sure. I knew you'd get bored of me. I just wasn't good enough for you, was I? I wasn't Mia," her voices calms from the anger, and instead breaks from the hurt hitting her fully.
"No please Marj. You are good enough, I don't deserve you. Nothing happened with Mia I promise," I try to reason, but she isn't having any of it.
"No you don't deserve me. You deserve Mia clearly," she spits at me in disgust.
"Marj please-"
"Don't call me that. Reece I can't even think to look at you. I love you so much, yet you clearly don't feel the same. I'm leaving," she interrupts, grabbing her keys and storming out the house, leaving me standing there shocked.
