(Reece's pov)
A second night. A second night away from her. I can't do another night. She may be angry at me, but surely she has had time now. I'm sure she is hurting as much as I am. At least I hope she is, because this killing me.
It's been two days, two nights. Away from Marjorie because she is mad. Fuming.
But even then, she surely has to miss me, to want to be next to me.
I can't sleep, I can't eat, I can't do anything. Not without her. Everything is too heavy, nothing makes sense without her.
I don't even want to go to work. She'll probably be there, and I don't want her to see me like this. Tired, hungry but not at the same time, empty. She can't.
But I have to. I have to go, because I have a job, and if I call in sick it'll worry someone too much, I never take a day off.
Why? Why do I do this to myself? If I would've just shut up, she would've never left without saying anything.
I drag myself out of bed, chucking on a random outfit I found, before walking to work, I can't even be bothered to drive.
*
I arrive in the office, slumping myself into my chair, not wanting to do any work.
"Autumn is that-" Marjorie walks out of her office, before stoping, "Oh, Reece," she whispers quietly.
"Morning gorg- Marjorie," I reply, wanting to tell her good morning, I always do. I stop myself from calling her 'gorgeous', I don't know our situation at the moment and I don't want to push it.
"Morning. H-How are you?"
"I'm... I'm.... here, you?" I reply, not knowing what else to really say.
"I'm okay," she responds quietly, before turning on her heel and walking back into her private office.
I'm left alone again. She's doing okay. She's doing okay and I'm a mess. Clearly I'm overreacting.
I check the shifts for today, and see it's just me and Marjorie in today, and she is on the early, whereas I'm on the late.
I shake my head, knowing I'll have to have another awkward interaction with Marjorie, and probably have to watch her leave without me.
I distract myself with work, getting fully engrossed in all my overdue paperwork I've needed to do recently.
I only snap out of it when I feel a hand on my shoulder. Looking up, I see Marjorie standing above me, a gentle look on her face.
"Reece? It's your lunch," she says.
"Oh. Yeah I'll take it in a minute," I say, turning back to my paperwork.
I hear her sigh, before she walks away, closing her door, but not fully.
I get engrossed back into my work, and before I know it, the nursery has closed.
"Okay Marj, everything is- Reece?" Char starts, stopping halfway through, confused as why I'm here.
"Hi Char. This does happen to be where I work," I joke, tidying up the last of the papers all over my desk.
"I know that. It's just I know Marj is staying here for now because of a certain thing," Char replies, gesturing towards me.
"How do you know? Wait Marj is staying here?" I question.
"Yeah, on her sofa. She knows it's not the safest, but it's better than out in the freezing cold, and she didn't want to disturb either me or Winter, especially knowing our partners," Char replies.
I can feel my heart break. She is sleeping at work. Because of me. I say my goodbyes to Charlotte, and push open Marjorie's door.
There she is, lying on the sofa, a thin blanket half resting over her body, as she is softly asleep.
I can't believe that if Char didn't say anything, I would've gone home, assuming Marjorie went whilst I was doing paperwork.
I slowly walk over to her, kneeling down beside her. I softly stroke her cheek, and feel her flex into the touch.
"Mhmmm, Reece," she mumbles in her sleep.
"Hey baby."
"Miss you," she mumbles, still fast asleep.
"I'm here now baby," I whisper, and a small smile dances on her lips.
"Thankfully. Home?"
"I can get you home," I say and she hums in agreement. I take that as a sign, and lift her up into my arms, keeping the blanket on her.
I grab her car keys, and carry her to her own car, placing her in the passenger seat and leaning across to do her seatbelt. I must've bashed her slightly, as she stirs awake underneath me.
"Reece?"
"Hi. You fell asleep in your office, and then you asked me to take you home," I explain to her, leaning back to give her a bit of space.
"Okay. I've missed you," she whispers.
I walk around the front of the car, and climb into the drivers seat.
"Missed you too," I reply, kissing her cheek, before driving us both home.
