"Marjorie? You almost ready?" Reece calls up the stairs, wondering where his wife was.
"In a minute Reece!" She yells back in frustration. Reece walks up the stairs, shaking his head.
"Hey, you," his says as he walks into the bedroom.
"Reece, I said in a minute!" She snaps, putting her head in her hands.
"Whoa. It's okay, relax now gorgeous. It's going to be alright," he says softly, placing his hands on her shoulders.
"I- I don't think I can't do this," she whispers.
"If you really don't want to, we won't. But me and Aut will be there the whole time, right by your side."
"I know, thank you," she says, standing up, turning around and hugging her husband. "Let's go then."
The couple walk out the house, down the road to the pub only five minutes away.
"Reece, you'll be there the whole time?"
"Of course I will. So will Aut, we're here for you, every step of the way," he replies, squeezing her hand.
"Big brother. Marjorie," Autumn says from next to them.
"Aut! You're here!" Marjorie squeals, pulling her best friend in for her hug. Autumn hugs her back, Marjorie was the only person she would hug.
"Well done, standing right in front of you," Autumn comments, it sounded sarcastic to most, but to these friends, it was love.
"Funny. Let's go get seated, she'll be here soon," Marjorie says, grabbing Reece's hand as they walked in.
They get seated, and the wait for Marjorie starts. Reece notices it first, nothing big, her just being a bit more spacey than normal. He knows what's going through her head, how nerve wracking it must be. He places a hand on her thigh, letting her know he's close. She places a hand over the top of his, silently thanking him.
"Marjorie?" A voice comes from behind them, and the brunette takes a deep breath before turning around.
"Hi mum," she says.
"Well aren't you going to give your mother a hug?" Marjorie rolls her eyes, standing up and reluctantly hugging her mother. "Oh wow, it's a bit harder to hug all of you now," she whispers in her daughter's ear, knowing no one else could hear her.
"You must be Reece?" She says, letting go of her daughter and reaching out to shake his hand.
"Yes, I'm Reece, it's nice to meet you," he meets her hand, shaking it.
"And you?" She points to Autumn.
"I'm Autumn. Reece is my brother," Autumn explains.
"Well then, nice to meet you Autumn," she shakes the redhead's hand too, before sitting down.
A waitress walks over, asking if they are ready for their order.
"Uhm, I think so," Reece says, looking around the table, receiving nods from everyone. "I'll just have the signature burger you guys do."
"Yep okay. Who's next?"
"I'll have the same," Autumn says.
"Got it. 2 signature burgers. Anything else?"
"I'll have-" Marjorie stops her sentence when she feels her mother tap her thigh.
"We'll have 2 salads please," Marjorie's mother says.
"You sure gorgeous? You love their pulled beef here?"
"Yep. I'm sure," she mumbled.
"Okay, 2 salads, 2 burgers. Coming right up."
She hated how much control her mother had over her still, how she could still control her meals despite barely knowing Marjorie.
The one thing she hated most, was how much control she let Constance have over her. She didn't tell her no, she couldn't. She felt inferior, she was made to be inferior.
"Gorgeous? You okay?" Reece asks, noticing her staring at the ground.
"Uhm yeah, I'm fine. I just need to pop to the bathroom, excuse me," she says, looking for an easy exit.
"I'll come with. I need to freshen up anyways," her mother says. Great, the one thing she was escaping from was following her. She couldn't say no, it would be obvious then.
Marjorie and her mother stood side by side at the sinks, both silent. Marjorie splashed some cold water on her face, she just needed to get through this dinner.
"Marjorie, here."
"Mum. I don't want any of your makeup thanks."
"You need it. You're not going to be able to keep that handsome husband of yours if not. He needs some beauty in you, and we can see where he'll have to get it from, and where he doesn't get it," she remarks.
Marjorie just lowered her head in silence, drying off her hands and walking back to the table.
"Baby, you okay?" Reece asks, placing a hand on her thigh as she sits down.
"Yeah, fine," she brushes it off.
"Marj? You sure?" Aut asks.
"Oh my days you two! I'm fine!" She snaps.
"Okay, okay," Autumn mumbles.
Marjorie's mother comes back just as their food arrives. Everyone tucks into it, everyone expect Marjorie. She pushes the salad around with her fork, she didn't want it at all. She wanted her favourite from the menu. Not this. But she couldn't tell her mum no.
She felt tears in her eyes, she couldn't cry. Instead, she took a deep breath, stopping the tears.
"Gorgeous, you going to eat?" Reece asks.
"Yeah Marjorie. Come on, eat something. It's no trouble," her mother says from beside her. She recognised the tone. The same one she used when she was little, when she was manipulating the brunette.
"Sorry," she mumbles, taking a few bites of her salad.
"So Knight.... that's a powerful last name around here," Constance says.
"Yeah... unfortunately," Autumn mumbled.
"It's tied to our father. Not us," Reece said, rolling his eyes at the mention of his dad.
"Still... a powerful last name to carry. Must get you all kinds of... people."
"Yeah I guess."
"Sorry, you clearly don't wanna talk about it. I will stop. How about work? Anything going on with this nursery of yours?"
"Well, it's not too bad. Busy, but we manage. We have a good manager, don't we?" Reece replies, giving his wife a gentle, playful nudge.
"Oh of course, the very best manager!" Constance says, as if she was mocking her.
"I'm sorry guys, but I need to go home," Marjorie says, getting up and walking out the pub.
"I'll go get her," Reece says.
"Baby! Wait up!" He yells after her, and she stops to wait for him. She turns around, tears in her eyes and she looks up at her husband, her safe place.
"Did you not hear her?!" She yells, her emotions all letting go.
"I know gorgeous, I know," he says softly, pulling her into him. She shakes in his arms, holding onto him to feel comfort.
"Marjorie! Come back inside!" Autumn yells.
"Aut, I'm calling it. I'm going to take her home now, this dinner is done now," Reece says, looking at his sister.
"Oh please. She's overreacting. Her mother has been nothing but nice to her, we've been there. She was even nice to us, I don't get why she talks so badly of her."
"You didn't hear what she said to me in the bathroom, when she whispered in my ear, her tone every time she comments about me or talks to me! You don't get it!" Marjorie yells at her.
"Oh please," Autumn rolls her eyes, walking away to her car.
"Autumn! I'm taking her home now."
"Baby? I just need to go inside to grab something and pay the bill, do you want to come with?" Reece turns his attention back to his wife.
"I'll stay here, I don't want to see my mother," she sniffles. He lets her sit down on the bench just by the exit to the pub, kissing her before walking back into the building.
Reece comes back 5 minutes later, a few boxes in his hands.
"Okay sweet girl, let's go now," Reece says, smiling at her, kissing her cheek.
"What's that baby?" Marjorie asks, looping her arm in his.
"Just our leftovers," he says, and watches as her face dims.
"Oh. Okay," she mumbles.
They reach their house quickly, and get inside. Reece ushers Marjorie to go change to something comfy, whilst he heads to the kitchen.
"Handsome? You done?" She calls out, walking down the stairs in a hoodie and some shorts.
"Yeah all done baby, come to the living room," he calls back.
She walks into the living room, seeing food on the coffee table waiting, blankets on the side of the couch, and the tv already set to play her favourite show.
"Reece?" She breathes out.
"I know tonight was tough, so I wanted to make you feel just as special as you are. I've got the tv ready, and I went inside the pub to get your favourite, their pulled beef," Reece explained, wrapping his arms around her from behind, resting his head on her shoulder.
"Oh Reece," she whispers.
"Come on, come sit. You need to eat food," he leads her to sit down, getting her comfy before sitting next to her.
"Thank you darling, I love you so much," she says, kissing him.
They flick on the tv, and they settle in for their impromptu date night after a rough evening.
"Reece?" She looks up to him.
"You okay gorgeous?"
"I love you." They both smile.
"I love you more."
