Jassi cupped his cheek with one hand and caressed his eyes, which were red from all the crying. "Are you really okay, baby?" he asked gently.
"I don't know," said Aman, leaning into his embrace. Jassi kissed the side of his head, broke the hug, and poured the hot chocolate into the cups. "Give it to him," Jassi said to Aman, pointing toward Rohit's room.
"I cannot face him," Aman said in a low voice.
"You can, baby," Jassi reassured him.
Aman went to Rohit's room while Jassi went to Virat. He handed him the cup. Virat took a sip and smiled. "Aman was right, it's really nice," he said, and saw a smile spread across Jassi's face.
"Bhai... I want... I mean..." Jassi fumbled a bit with his words, feeling nervous.
"Jassi, you don't need to be nervous around me. You know I will never judge you. Tell me," Virat said gently, gesturing for him to take a seat.
"I am really sorry, bhai. It was and still is really hard for me—to even look at him or talk to him. I cannot forget that he left me alone. I know he suffered a lot, that's why he ran away, and I also know he came back for me, to take me with him, but I was so angry with him. I didn't even go in front of him, and I requested the owner to tell him that I was adopted by someone," Jassi said, looking at his feet, unable to meet his eyes.
"He came back for you?"
"Yes, he did. After two years, he came back for me, but I was not ready to forgive him. I was 10 years old. I could not just forget," Jassi said, tears rolling down his cheeks.
"I understand, Jassi. No one can imagine what you went through alone. Take your time," Virat said softly.
After 10 minutes, when Jassi had calmed down, Virat asked, "Anything else you want to talk about?" He noticed Jassi looking at him again.
"Bhai, um, about Aman... do you— I mean to say—"
"You like him, don't you? And you want to know whether I approve of it or not?" Virat asked, to which Jassi nodded.
Virat ruffled his hair lovingly. "I trust my brother's judgment and I trust you, but I will tell you, Jassi, he is really soft-hearted and emotional. He understands how the world works, but sometimes it's just too much for him. So, just try to understand him at times when he is emotional—because sometimes the reason may not be important for us, but it is for him," he explained.
"Like his coffee and books?" Jassi asked, to which Virat chuckled.
"Yes," he replied.
"Bhai, have you thought about... um, Rohit? I just went into the room sometime back, and he was crying a lot," Jassi said in a low voice.
"I need some time, Jassi. I will talk to him. For now, Aman's company will help," Virat answered, to which Jassi agreed.
"I had to discuss something regarding the project with you," Jassi said, and they moved to the study.
Aman hesitantly knocked on the door and went in, only to see Rohit sobbing with his head buried in his knees. He sat beside him, and Rohit looked up.
"Don't deny it, Jas made it. He sent me here to give it to you," Aman said when Rohit didn't take the cup.
"I'm sorry," they both said at the same time after finishing their hot chocolates.
Rohit just looked down at that.
"I'm sorry, Rohit. I shouldn't have snapped at you. I mean, I still stand by what I said, but I could have said it better," Aman said gently.
"You were right. I am not able to understand anything. From childhood, there was always a fear that I would be alone and that people would leave me. I never had anyone except..." Rohit choked on his words. Aman held his hand in support.
"Now that I have got both of you, I just... I don't know," Rohit said, burying his head in his knees again. Aman could not help him in any way. He just sat there, offering him silent support.
After an hour, Jassi knocked on the door and called Aman while Virat entered the room. Aman just gave him a helpless look, seeing Rohit sobbing for almost two hours now. Virat nodded in assurance, and Aman left the room.
Rohit looked up to see Virat standing in front of him. He quickly wiped his tears, stood up, but stumbled. Virat supported him and made him sit on the bed.
Virat went to freshen up, and when he came back, he said, "Go and freshen up," to Rohit, who silently obeyed.
Once the door closed, Virat tried to calm himself. Seeing Rohit like that broke his heart, but he also couldn't forget the words Rohit had said to him and how he had treated him. It felt like his actions hadn't even been considered or remembered until now.
Virat sat on the couch near the window. The fresh, cold air helped him clear his mind. Rohit returned and sat on the bed in front of him.
"I think we rushed into this. We should take a break," Virat said, which shocked Rohit.
