The next day, Virat woke up and checked his phone; there wasn't any text from Rohit.
He didn't know what to do. He had to go for practice, so he went ahead with it.
"You okay, Biscuit? You look a little dull," AB asked, putting an arm around his shoulder.
Virat thought about how Rohit's touch felt so different. It only made him miss Rohit more.
All he could remember was Rohit's anger from last night. He was really worried because Rohit wasn't being responsive. He hadn't even replied to his message. Virat checked his phone again and again, but there was nothing.
"Biscuit?" AB called again, noticing he seemed lost.
"Can I go to Mumbai?" Virat asked. He didn't know why, but he just wanted to see Rohit and maybe apologize for his behavior.
"Any problem?"
"Just a family thing."
"If it's too serious, then of course. But if it's manageable, I'd advise not to. Tomorrow is the first match, and you are the captain," AB said softly.
"Hmm," Virat muttered before heading to the nets.
At the Mumbai Indians camp, everyone noticed their captain was in a different mood. Rohit arrived, didn't discuss anything, and headed straight to the nets. He was hitting the ball so hard that they had lost count of how many flew out of the stadium.
"What's wrong with Rohit Bhaiya today?" Jassi asked Hardik, who was also looking worried.
"No clue," Hardik replied.
Rohit was angry with himself. How could he have controlled his temper when he yelled at Virat? All he could remember was how low Virat had sounded. Thinking about it in the morning, he felt the hurt he must have caused.
"Rohit, it's enough. You'll get hurt," Sachin Sir said, and Rohit listened to him.
"Paaji."
"Yes, kiddo?"
"Please handle today's processes and decisions. I don't feel well, and I don't want it to affect the team."
"Do you need anything, bacha? Should I call a doctor?" Sachin Sir asked.
"No, Paaji. I'll just rest for some time," Rohit said and left.
In his room, after freshening up, Rohit thought about how to talk to Virat. He stared at the apology text Virat had sent and felt guilt consume him. A lone tear rolled down his cheek.
He didn't have the courage to call Virat directly, so he called KL to check on him.
"Hey, Rohit," KL greeted.
"Hi, K. How's it going?"
"All good."
"KL, is Virat okay? Don't tell him I asked, but can you let me know how he's doing?"
"Did you two fight again?"
"Something like that."
"I'm not sure exactly, but he looked dull yesterday and didn't even have dinner. He said he was tired. Imagine Virat saying he was tired. This morning, AB asked him too, but he didn't say much. He still looks the same."
"Oh, okay. Thank you, K."
"Please solve it soon."
"Yeah, I will."
That night, Virat was sitting on the balcony, thinking about his time with Rohit at the cottage and Mahi Bhai's house. He remembered how Rohit treated him and the love they shared. But today, Rohit hadn't even called.
A knock on the door pulled him out of his thoughts. He opened it to find hotel staff.
"Sir, this is for you," the staff said, leaving a trolley in the room before Virat could ask anything.
He opened it to find his favorite food. His phone rang, and when he saw the name, he picked up immediately.
"Love," he heard Rohit's voice and sat on the bed, clutching the phone close to his ear.
"Love."
Virat sighed in relief as he heard Rohit. It wasn't just relief; it was longing.
"I'm sorry," Rohit said.
A lone tear rolled down Virat's cheek as he heard Rohit apologize. He could feel how sorry Rohit was.
"For yelling at me? For missing me and worrying about me?" Virat asked.
Rohit smiled at how much Virat understood him, though he could also sense the insecurities in his voice.
"It's not that, Vi. I—"
"Rohit, when I said I love you, I gave you the right to worry and care about me. As best friends, we always yelled at each other. I don't think anything has changed now, has it?"
Rohit felt lucky to have him.
"No, nothing has changed. It's just that now it's much more than being best friends, and I cannot lose it. I was worried when you didn't pick up the phone, and I just snapped. I'm really sorry, my love."
"You'll never lose me," Virat assured him.
"Did you forgive me?"
"You said I forgot you," Virat complained, making everything feel normal again for Rohit.
"I know. I'm sorry, baby. I'll make it up to you, I promise," Rohit said softly.
"I miss you so much, Ro."
"I miss you more. This is the first time we've been apart since we got together. But we'll be together soon after the first match. I'll try to come to Bangalore."
"Yeah."
"Now, will you please eat dinner? You haven't eaten anything since last night."
"How do you— Hmm, never mind."
"Please eat something, baby. I don't want you to fall sick. And you not eating because of me makes me feel even more guilty."
"Ro, don't say that. I'll have it."
"I just want to see you, Vi. I wish I were there."
For the first time, Virat felt how much Rohit missed him. It was usually the other way around.
"I know, love. But as you said, we'll be together soon. Focus on winning the games and come back to me."
"Do you think we're becoming cringe?"
Virat chuckled while eating.
"We're supposed to be. Love brings it out a little."
Rohit smiled at that comment.
"Sleep, Ro. We both have matches tomorrow. I love you."
"Love you more. Goodnight, love."
"Goodnight."
