Valentine's Day is around the corner. I see it on everyone's faces. I see the way Shan blushes and squirms when we bring it up at lunch. I see the way Joey has been saving up money; even if he's more of a reserved person - It's still noticeable. I see the way Gibsie is bouncing with energy every time Claire is around. It's silly, but I feel hollow.
Seeing the chocolates in the front of a shop whenever I walk into it makes my stomach churn, and seeing pink teddy bears on the shelves worsen it. They'll be on sale after a day, is what I tell myself. It just makes me feel worse.
All of those bears deserve a loving home. I happen to know that it's not mine.
Hugh will ask me to be his Valentine. I'll say yes. Even if our eyes aren't on each other at all. It's safer this way.
