I get a call from Hughie 4 hours after Lizzie left me.

"Katie?" His voice cracks before I can even get a word out.

I curl up tighter in bed, breathing softly yet loud enough for him to hear that I'm there.

"Katie, Lizzie's dead."

~~

I'm numb as I sit on the pavement not too far from my house. I think there's a lot of things going on, but I don't hear it, and I barely see it.

I can only stare at the deep crimson stained in the middle of the road. There's little cones around it to block it off for their investigation.

The gardei are discussing with each other over what happened. Their lights flash blue and I think there's an ambulance here, too. The visions start to hurt my eyes but atleast I feel even the slightest of something.

Tears have long stained my cheeks now. I've never been so empty before.

I know this is all my fault. If I spoke differently, if I did everything right, this wouldn't have happened. Right?

I finally pull my eyes away from the blood and see Hugh pacing, his sniffles making it obvious that he's crying too.

Most boys don't look cute when they cry, but he does.

Oh.

I swallow thickly and turn my head, seeing Feely and noticing how he bites on his finger to keep his tears at bay.

It's cold. And it's dark. Yet I'm the only one still wearing my school uniform compared to Shan, Johnny, Hugh, Feely, and all the others in the neighborhood who are nosy.

Shan is wearing one of Johnny's big ol' jackets while he holds her hand tightly, providing her reassurance even as she refuses to speak to anyone.

I'm wrapping my arms around my knees when I notice there's a small tear on my tights.

My bottom lip trembles and I sniffle, hugging myself as I hide my face from the rest of the world.
