Flashback from the end of the last chapter:
"Yes, I always do. No matter what happens, I'll get out of the situation, but everyone I care about will die," Sophie said coldly, but also in a hurt tone. Yumiko said nothing because she didn't know the answer. The two continued talking for a while until Yumiko eventually left. Sophie then spent a while thinking about it before finally falling asleep.
Now:
The next day, Eugene, Ezekiel, and Princess were in a building that resembled a train station, while Yumiko was talking to her brother, whom she had seen at the bakery because he apparently worked there. Sophie was generally looking around, but her thoughts were the whole time on Rosita, Adrian Michael, and Alexandria. Eugene walked around the station with Stephanie, while Ezekiel and Princess did the same. Ezekiel sat down on a bench somewhere, while Princess continued walking. Eugene stopped for a moment when he saw a sign about arrivals and communications, but when he read it, he carried on walking, following Stephanie. Ezekiel looked nervously at Eugene when he saw that the two of them were in the upstairs department. Eugene followed Stephanie into an office where there was a radio, where Eugene answered and did something on the radio. After a while, he was able to make contact and speak to Rosita, who was with Adrian at Judith's and was helping her with something. "But Alexandria is destroyed, and we're slowly running out of food," Rosita said in a very serious tone as she spoke into the radio. "Yes, things have been better here," Adrian said, equally serious after confirming Rosita's statement. "But how's Sophie? Is she coping? You know how she is. She's the loner type, but now that I'm not here, it just worries me." came again from Rosita, and Eugene heard the worry in her voice. Adrian nodded. Even though Wiegen couldn't see it, he knew he was worried about Sophie too, but who could blame him? Adrian loved Sophie, and she loved him too. "Did you say no food, Rosita?" came through Eugene's radio, but Adrian and Rosita could only hear Eugene because the connection wasn't good, and when Eugene said something, there was static. "Yes, I did," Rosita answered seriously. "Eugene, are you still there?" Rosita asked seriously but also confused when she heard the static. "Eugene? Can you hear me?" Rosita asked again when she got no answer. "Can you hear me? Eugene?" Rosita asked again when there was still no answer and she only heard static. "Is he gone?" Adrian asked seriously, to which Rosita nodded seriously but also defeated. "Something's wrong," Eugene said seriously as he turned to Stephanie after Eugene could no longer talk to Rosita because the connection had suddenly disappeared. "Change the frequency," Stephanie said immediately, seriously, as she suggested a solution. Eugene nodded, and just as he was about to change the frequency, Mercer came in with some Commonwealth soldiers after Mercer had kicked in the door. "Hands up and away from the radio," Mercer said seriously as he looked at Stephanie and then at Eugene. Stephanie raised her hands, which Eugene did as well when he stood up, having been sitting on a chair in front of the radio after talking with Rosita and Adrian earlier. "I assure you, we didn't hurt anyone," Eugene said nervously, while one of the soldiers put Eugene's hands behind his back before pushing him to the ground and tying his hands with cable ties. "You're under arrest for unauthorized use of government property," Mercer said coldly and seriously as the soldier tied Eugene's hands. Mercer just looked at Stephanie and gave her a look before looking back at Eugene, who was now standing still as the soldier held him. Eugene saw that Ezekiel and Practical Princess were by the door, also with their hands behind their backs, while a soldier each stood behind them. Eugene was then escorted out of the room, and the group was taken to an empty room that was more like an office. Eugene paced back and forth around the room while Princess sat and Ezekiel stood, but everyone's hands were now free again. "Shit, I messed everything up," came a nervous but also desperate reply from Eugene, to which Princess shook her head. A few minutes passed when a man in a suit suddenly entered the room. "Where is the woman who was with me at the train station?" Eugene immediately asked nervously when he saw the man in the suit go behind the desk. "You are hereby informed that you are being charged with trespassing, willful endangerment, and illegal communication. All of these are in violation of Article Four, Section Two, of the Commonwealth Penal Code," he said in a cold tone, looking at Eugene but not answering Eugene's question. Just as he was about to say something, the man continued. "Within the next hour, a judge will hear you. If found guilty, you will be banished outside our walls and may only return," the man continued, looking at his desk and then at Eugene. "We had good reason. Please listen to us," Eugene said after shaking his head nervously. "Tell that to the judge. It probably won't matter since you've already broken several rules after barely a day," the man explained coldly, to which Princess shook her head angrily and stood up. "We want to talk to our lawyer," Princess said angrily, trying to remain calm as she stood up. "You have a lawyer?" the man asked, confused, as he looked at Princess. "Yeah, damn right, a pretty good one, too. And if you're so into the rules, then we deserve a lawyer, that's our right," Ezekiel said seriously, as he and the man maintained eye contact. "That applies to citizens. Not to asylum seekers," the man replied coldly but seriously. "You have to earn privileges," the man added. "Please... Let me talk to Stephanie. She can vouch for us," Eugene asked seriously, trying to find a solution. "She's being treated specially and charged as a citizen," the man said as he explained what was happening to Stephanie. Princess rolled her eyes at that, and now she couldn't stay calm anymore. "What nonsense," Princess said in an agitated tone as she approached the man. "I'll take over now, John," came a calm voice as another man suddenly came in. Behind him came a woman, and Eugene saw that it was Stephanie. The man was wearing a black suit, red shirt, and white tie. The group looked at the man who came in, while Princess looked back at the man behind the desk, who turned out to be John. "You may go," the man said as he looked at John. "Mr. Hornsby, that's not possible. You have to go to court," John said seriously as he looked at the other man, who revealed himself to be Mr. Hornsby. "I'll get Mercer." "You're not being taken away," Mr. Hornsby said seriously as he then left the room. "Wait a minute, Day was the guy from the video, wasn't he?" Ezikiel said, surprised but also confused. "The jerk? Definitely from the video," Princess confirmed. "Hornsby is someone you can trust," Stephanie said seriously, to which Eugene nodded. "Thank you," Eugene said with relief as he smiled at Stephanie. "don't thank me too quickly," Stephanie said seriously as she looked at Eugene. "He might be able to prevent your banishment, but it won't be free. You'll pay for this one way or another," Stephanie said seriously as she explained, but she looked at everyone once. The group waited a while until Mr Hornsby returned with Mercer, whereupon John left, even though it was not voluntarily.
