Flashback from the end of the last chapter:
"It's here," came Sophie's cold reply as she pointed to a nearby house, whereupon the two of them went. Sophie went in first. The first thing you saw was a mattress, a table and a pile of things on the table. "Are you going to close the door?" asked Sophie after Michael came in too.
Now:
"What kind of house is this, how do you even know this place, Sophie?" asked Micheal, surprised but still curious as he looked around while walking around. "I was often here with Carl, he found the house shortly after we arrived in Alexandria and at some point it became "our place", I would say," Sophie explained honestly, smiling slightly as she thought back to the time with Carl. She then sat down on the mattress in one of the rooms. "Carl?" asked Micheal, confused, after Sophie had finished speaking. Sophie then nodded in confirmation, whereupon Micheal looked at her confused as he had no idea who Carl was. "Who is Carl?" asked Micheal, curiously, as he stood next to Sophie, who was sitting on the mattress. "My...brother, well he is...Wasn't my real brother but we were like real siblings you know-" Sophie then explained, and Michael heard that Sophie seemed to find it difficult to talk about Carl even though Michael didn't know Carl. "Was..?" Michael then asked carefully as he sat down next to Sophie on the mattress and looked at her. "Was, he was bitten. He helped Siddiq but was bitten in the process," Sophie then explained, but you could hear that she was trying to suppress her emotions. "Damn...hey, I'm sorry, I'm sure he was a good guy, I mean, if you talk about him like that, it must mean something, right?" Michael then said, smiling and trying to lighten the mood a little. Sophie let out a slight smile. "Yes, he was, he was idiotic but cool," Sophie replied with a grin as she picked up the cards that were lying on the table next to the mattress. "What kind of game is that?" Michael asked curiously as he also looked at the cards. "You can play lots of games, but Carl and I mostly played mau mau with these cards. Carl tried to teach me card but it never worked," Sophie explained with a grin. "Do you want to play a round?" Michael asked with a grin. "Mau mau?" Sophie then asked to make sure she had understood correctly. Micheal then nodded and the two started playing after Sophie dealt the cards. The two played for a while, both cursing a little but still having fun. It was the first time in a long time that Sophie had fun without having to think about any concerns. The two played for a while until Sophie's walkie talkie made noises and Rosita's voice was heard. Rosita asked worriedly if Sophie was at the house, which Sophie then confirmed after she had explained to Rosita that she was at the house with Michael. "Okay, well, be careful," Rosita said worriedly. "Yes, we are," Sophie replied. "Hey, you're at the house, would it be possible for you to send Michael over for a bit?" Rosita said gently but seriously, whereupon Michael and Sophie looked at each other confusedly, but after a few seconds Sophie answered Rosita's question. "Yes, why?" Sophie answered, confused but still curious. "A few walkers caused some damage to the fences and since Michael is good with tools, I thought he could help, don't worry, the walkers are defeated, but the damage is still there," Rosita explained seriously. "Are any injured?" Sophie asked both seriously and worried, whereupon Rosita assured her that everything was fine because it was over in time, which made Sophie breathe a sigh of relief. "I'll send him over," Sophie then said, whereupon Michael said goodbye to Sophie quietly and then set off for Alexandria, arriving after a while. Meanwhile, Rosita and Sophie were still talking. "Hey, take care of yourself, okay? I know nothing has ever happened before, but be careful, OK?" Rosita asked worriedly. "I'll take care of you, mom, I promise," Sophie then assured Rosita, as Sophie knew that Rosita was always far too worried. "Good, thanks" came Rosita's smile, even though she knew that Sophie wouldn't see it through the walkie-talkie. The two talked for a while, and Rosita also asked if Sophie was okay, since Sophie has been going to the house more often than usual lately. "Yes - it's just that I miss him more than usual at the moment," Sophie said in a calm tone, but Rosita heard the sadness in Sophie's voice. "Hey, Carl would be proud of you if he was here now, I'm sure of that," Rosita said sympathetically. "Mh, yes, maybe you're right, but," Sophie began, but she was then interrupted by Rosita. "No, I don't want to hear any buts here," Rosita said firmly but gently, whereupon Sophie gave up. "Hey mom, I'll look around nearby, even though I always do that, but maybe there'll be something this time," Sophie suddenly said while the two were still talking. "Okay, but be careful, OK?" Rosita said worriedly, to which Sophie sighed. "Something else is happening around here, but I'll be careful, I promise, mom," Rosita said seriously but still sympathetically. Rosita was relieved that Sophie would be careful. "Well, you know better than some adults what kind of people are out there, just be careful," Rosita said seriously but still worriedly, but Sophie assured her again that she would be careful. So Sophie left the house and ran in one direction, away from the house, to look around for all sorts of things in the area. Sophie found a few bars but nothing else special until she suddenly heard voices in the distance. "Mom, there are guys here," Sophie said seriously as she took cover in the hope that no one would see her. "Sophie, come back to Alexandria, we'll sort this out with Michonne and discuss what we should do best." Rosita said seriously and slightly nervously. "Okay." Sophie said briefly. "Mom, I'll leave the walkie talkie on so you can hear everything even if I'm not on the walkie talkie," Sophie suddenly said quietly in a whisper. "Good idea," Rosita agreed, which made her a little relieved. So Sophie grabbed her pants and fastened them there like she always did. Then Sophie walked carefully and quietly in one direction but she looked around and saw that these guys were everywhere. Suddenly Sophie unconsciously approached a guy who had just hurt someone. Sophie cursed quietly because she hated what she was doing now. "Leave him alone," Sophie said coldly as she stood up and aimed her gun at the guy who was hurting the other person. "And who are you?" the guy asked in a mocking tone as he turned his attention to Sophie and Sophie didn't notice that there was someone else nearby who was watching the whole thing. "None of your business, leave him alone," Sophie said coldly. "Pretty brave for a child," the guy said with a grin, whereupon he suddenly approached Sophie. "You'd better stay where you are," Sophie warned the guy but he just laughed and continued walking towards her. "What if he doesn't?" he asked laughing. The guy continued walking towards Sophie and Sophie spoke again. Suddenly the man shot the person who was on the ground, the person the guy had injured before. "I warned you," Sophie said coldly but also a little angry as she shot the guy directly in the head so that he died and couldn't come back as a walker. Suddenly voices could be heard from afar as the others heard the shot and became suspicious. Sophie was just about to make a run for it when she suddenly saw a click behind her. It was the guy who had been watching the whole thing. Sophie then slowly turned around and saw a man who was only a few years older than Michael standing behind Sophie, but he was pointing his gun at Sophie. Sophie was just about to say something but the shot rang out as she looked at the man. Sophie fell to the ground and bled. Sophie's vision went black as she fell and she became unconscious after her vision disappeared. He had hit Sophie full on. The man shouted something to his comrades and they quickly disappeared. "Sophie? What were those shots? Sophie answer, Sophie! Little one, what's going on, please answer!" Rosita said through the walkie talkie and you could hear the panic in Rosita's voice when she heard the sounds of the shots. Rosita became more panicked when she got no answer.
