Serah POV
"I'm listening, Olsen, just say it."
"If they need a healing potion as strong as your blood it means they are the victim of the formula that leaked."
...
My body froze.
If what she said was true, the meaning of the war would take root in a deeper shit than we all had ever imagined.
Why would rogues need a cure against a wolfbane meant for war criminals?
I tried that brain of mine and the answers in there were scary.
Olsen's worry was indeed legitimate.
But to what extent shall we be scared?
"Serah look. I know it's crazy but I have to get in touch with that man who has been trying to kidnap you or whatever.
He is the key for the missing papers and maybe we might actually find a cure with you and we could eventually recuperate it and burn it. I don't."
Us two didn't have the same thought.
While I was wondering if we were preparing against the wrong enemy or did we simply add another menace on top, she was seeing a way for redemption.
I did sympathise with her but not on this one.
"We'll fight and if we capture him, you'll get to interrogate him!"
I was firm.
Olsen might be a human I met someone outside of the pack system, but I once was there too.
So for me, she's mine.
She was my people and with the responsibility bestowed upon me, I will protect her.
Even from her own foolishness.
I tried to move away from this place, understanding that my presence here was useless.
But she couldn't let go.
"Hear me out Serah! They plan to put you in that bunker, lock you up until the end of the war.
I can persuade them with a plan only if only you take me with you!"
Her eyes were pleading, in me she saw a solution but she didn't see what I saw.
"Olsen, do you even understand what you are asking for? That man I witnessed, from my own eyes, a death so horrendous of an innocent man.
Why? Because he tried to hide my existence.
I think I was born before your papers were stolen so stop deluding yourself.
He isn't kind or good hearted."
Her eyes tore up but I wasn't letting her have her way with me.
That dark character was cruel but I did understand that I was a precious existance that he wasn't willing to sacrifice.
It was not information that I was willing to share to my desperate friend but maybe I could get to talk to him.
He did have answers to most of my questions.
Was it the millisecond of hesitation or the way she played with my emotions but her words stuck.
"Hear me out Serah, it's no longer about you or the pack. It's about the future of your species. That formula would be the black plague of our century, if someone had found a way to be ahead, we need to know from where did he get the info and how did he know about you?
Serah, I know I sound unreasonable but I need you on this just as much as you need me.
I can forge the examinations so you are able to fight without your power being multiplied."
I looked at her confused.
"Is it not multiplied?"
I was sure my senses were way more keen than what they used to be.
"Heu, you actually attained a threshold with the mating, your strength is stagnant if I disclose it you would be locked in a basement and you won't see light before the end of the battle."
That was what we could call blackmailing.
Now I was getting mad.
"Olsen you are going too far!"
Gold replaced the calm brown but she did not flinch.
"I would only be doing my job actually."
It was enraging that she was right.
The table was full of documents but my focus was elsewhere.
"Olsen I can't risk your life nor mine nor anybody from the pack so you could chit chat with the enemy."
"I promise I would need my answers but if he's a fraud I would accept any sentences."
"That's the problem Olsen, you'll be dead before we could even give you a sentence."
Her hands came closer, taking mine in her hands.
"Serah, it is my only track on finding out our project incident."
To be fair, she did intrigue me.
And Olsen was the most valuable human around.
He wouldn't kill her.
But it was still dangerous.
The white of the lab was messing with my head and making my mind blank.
"So do you have a plan."
Her lips went to her ears and she was delighted to share her idea with me.
"So to be honest, we have to get you out of the pack house, so no more danger for the pack. Then, we have to end up only the two of us.
That would be the major problem but Kamil shared some nice stories so we could try this."
If the story he told her was the same that was in my mind then she was a completly nuts.
"Olsen, are you planning to make Kamil guard me from outside the walls so then we could sneak out."
"You indeed are smart. We'll use the passageway to get out of your house and that's it."
I face palmed myself but then it clicked.
"That man would find me on his own if I were to not be guarded."
"Exactly!"
She chirped but I wasn't as joyous as her.
I knew I was safe of life, but what would I become? A puppet or a weapon. Or was my life a price they would have to pay for something grandeur.
And that crazy scientist.
There was a higher chance of her losing her life.
The man wouldn't know the extent of her potential.
"Look here Olsen, it's too dangerous, we'll try to find some other way."
She came with her tablet in hand, the light of the screen was taking all of my attention.
These were statistics.
And those were literally on real time graphs.
"Why would the overall population of werewolves decrease at an unsettling pace?"
Olsen swiped with a map. The darker the colour, the more this phenomenon occurred.
"Europe."
I whispered.
"You see, maybe not yours, but my life is completely irrelevant compared to my life. It's not a coincidence. From where the formula spread, wolves are dying. It's a planned execution."
