Serah POV
Olsen swiped with a map. The darker the colour, the more this phenomenon occurred.
“Europe.”
I whispered.
“You see, maybe not yours, but my life is completely irrelevant compared to what’s happening. It's not a coincidence. From where the formula spread, wolves are dying. It's a planned execution.”
…
A planned execution.
Beyond the war, something scarier was looming over our head.
At the core, Olsen was right.
She could wipe away some of her guilt and get closer to the truth.
The man I saw wasn't a threat to my gut.
My gut was calm apart from the time he offed the seer.
I sighed, knowing that we were about to make a mess out of Red Crescent.
Jay.
How could I trick him?
“Olsen, do you have a plan? Jay won’t let me go. If he sees me he’ll know right away.”
The woman went away to her computer, and somehow, I followed.
I arched my back to be at the screen level, and the graphs made me uncomfortable.
It was a detailed rapport of the comportment of my DNA.
With each of them describing a specific attribute of mine.
Here I read; mate bond.
“Serah, have you ever managed to cheat on the mate bond?”
My eyes widened half shocked, half outraged, but somehow I couldn't completely deny.
I pushed my hair back. I tried to search in my memory, but nothing came as obvious.
“How would you even ask that?”
Olsen didn't look at me, but she showed me the lines on her computer.
“This how impactful your mate bond is.”
She pointed her figure into that red line that imitated a mountain range.
“It is calculated by making your lycan genes react to Jay's werewolf genes.
It is in his genes to be greatly impacted by yours regardless of your human or lycan side.
However, on your end, there is a great impact indeed, but it is entirely related to the percentage of lycan genes you manifest in a certain time; here called (t).
As we can see, you tend to lose control and overuse your powers, but the reverse is also possible. There are times when you can dissolve those superhuman genes.
Thus, this graph it shows that at some point you can control with only your will.”
Christ, it felt like going back to school and doing analytics by comparing alleles in certain species.
To study mine made me feel like a laboratory rat.
Olsen studied me in ways that only that mad man worked on me.
Those samples of blood, I might find the answers to these mysteries.
From the moment I was alone with Olsen, I had never felt so unsure.
If it was simply a war that I had to face, I could face head. Alive or dead, at least I could give in my best. But if it was with hidden truth that we had to be faced with, things would get complicated. At some it would be me that would be in front of the dilemma. I might need to make a decision that would tear me apart.
They said I would be the doom or the salvage of the world.
If I had to choose between my family and werewolves?
The species or the pack?
The pack or Jay?
I hated Olsen for reminding me of my nature.
Born to be the one in millions, but it was a fate that I started to feel on my shoulder.
“Do you mean I need to cheat Jay?”
…
Getting out of the white lab to be welcomed by a sky covered in clouds.
The world went under a grey filter.
The trees lost their vibrance, the grass was muddied, and only the wind hummed its song.
Or was it a warning?
Alerting us of the coming disaster.
Before falling into this world.
My life was full of joy, colors, and useless noise.
Somehow, I never felt like I belonged.
The books were smarter than the people in school.
I never really had any friends. every time I got attached to someone, I suddenly skipped a grade or work would take over my social life.
The only solace in that life was my family. Apart from my mom, they all brought to me that missing piece, still full of unsaid words.
But I loved training, going in the woods, nature…
When meeting with Jess, everything changed.
Curiosity was sparked, I had a sparing partner, and she taught me about a world that was supposed to be mine.
I did resent my mom for putting me in that endless loneliness, but at this exact moment, I understood why.
Even today, I wasn't ready to make a choice that would have a worldwide impact.
I let the air sink in my system, but it wasn't much of a guide.
It was a path I alone had to take.
It was decided then how the future would unfold.
My legs understood the assignment, and I speeded towards a smell that was entirely mine.
With those of mine, I could manage the feat she asked for.
I analysed one second so I could have some intimacy, and the path was cleared.
The door flew open, but I closed it behind me, and I jumped in the arms of my loved one.
His muscular arms wrapped around my frame, and we both were seated on his chair.
He pulled me even closer enough for him to feel my ribs.
I simply let myself sink in his frame, and I scented a familiar fear.
My lashes turned to his face, and his eyes held a mixture of worry and helplessness.
“What is it, Jay?”
“Kamil told me about his plan of putting you in your houses while I get to stay in the pack without any contact with you?”
Somehow, in his distress, I saw a child making me want to console him.
I cupped his face and stole a few chaste kisses.
“They already told you?”
His eyes glimmered with anger, but he managed to only share with me his sorrow.
“I don't want you away from me.”
This is exactly where my mission starts.
“Jay, I would like to go home too.”
I could feel it in my guts that he sensed that my request was somehow not full.
“But I can't leave you alone when there is a guy that firmly stated that he was coming for you.”
“I'd like you to trust me on this one, I need to finish something, and I don't want to be distracted by your presence. I need privacy, Jay.”
He didn't like how I formulated the request, and he sure knew something wasn't alright.
And wasn't going to keep it to himself.
“What is it that you're finding?”
Fire travelled in my stomach, not believing that I was already caught.
I had a small laugh in me, and I had to pull this one joker. It might actually work.
“Jay, I need to cheat on you, so you have to be away for a few hours.”
