Spike - Break

"Can I join you?"

He looks up with his eyebrows knitted, as if the question confounds him. Then he moves the clutter from the table and gestures for me to take a seat.

I do, placing down my lunchbox and opening it up, the smell of yesterday's cold pasta hitting my nostrils. I take a bite and decide it tastes way better fresh.

Spike's eating Weetabix and blood in a bowl like cereal, placing his spoon down in between bites to stare into space, obviously thinking about something important.

And I let him think and he lets me eat, in a comfortable silence I can't really get anywhere else. I don't have to tell him how I'm feeling, why I'm here on a Wednesday afternoon instead of in the cafeteria or why my eyes are red from crying. 

I listen to the hum of the refrigerator, the scrape of the spoon, I focus on the texture of the pasta. The world feels so far away when I'm here. Having lunch in a crypt is a strange thing - it's uncanny, like I'm not really living in reality. Normal people won't ever set foot in a place like this, let alone hang out in it. 

Finishing my food makes me feel empty, not full; especially when I see I have five minutes to get back to campus. My chair scrapes across the floor and Spike stands up too. He places his bowl in the sink, then retrieves something from one of the high-up cupboards. 

I swing my backpack over my shoulder, wondering if I should say something before deciding against it, but Spike reaches out. He gives me a chocolate bar. 

Not just any, but my favourite. 

"Hope the day picks up." he says quietly.

I nod and then I'm out of there, back into the real world.
