sorry for any mistakes i've spent way too long on this :p

"Hey, girlfriend."

The courtyard is sunny, yet relatively empty, because the summer fate doesn't officially start for another ten minutes. I'm surprised Faith is here bright and early - not that I'm not glad to see her.

I smile in greeting, still setting out the last of my cakes. I've made three trays of cinnamon buns (because they always go down well with the Scoobies), one tray of cupcakes and one massive tray of fudge brownies. Faith is eyeing the cupcakes - she's practically salivating - so I pick one up and extend my hand.

"It's on the house."

"You're the best!"

She immediately takes a bite and moans.

"You really should take me up on my offer, you know." she raises her eyebrows at me.

"Are you referring to the offer where I jeopardise my education to become your personal chef?"

She nods, taking another massive bite of the cupcake, finishing it off. Ah, to be a cupcake...

"What's in it for me?" I tease, trying not to grimace as she chews the hunk of cake.

"Whatever you want, princess." She winks at me and I pretend to tie my shoe so she doesn't see my face turn bright red. When I pop back up, she asks, "You're not gonna be stuck here all day, are you?"

"Willow said she'd mind the store for an hour so I can grab some lunch."

She nods, "I'll come find you at... one?"

"Sure." I respond, sounding a lot calmer than I feel. I'm nervous my cakes won't sell well and I'm also nervous because Faith is in the general vicinity. Crushes might be fun but I'm starting to wonder if the anxiety they cause is worth it.

She waves goodbye and the school gates officially open, spilling teens and parents into the grounds in unprecedented volumes. You can say what you like about Sunnydale High, but they do throw a good fate. Last year, the gang and I all went together and had a sleepover in Xan's basement after, staying up until the early hours of the morning, watching old reruns of our favourites shows and forgetting about whatever impending doom was threatening us at the time. I promise myself this year will be just as fun.

I take a deep breath and let myself enjoy the festivities.

Although the fate stretches into the evening, by lunchtime, all my desserts have been sold. I feel proud as Faith comes over at one o'clock like promised. I'd just got off the phone with Will, telling her she didn't need to take over and promising to meet up with her and Oz at the firework show later.

"Wow," she breathes and the praise sounds genuine. "No scraps left for your favourite slayer?"

"Sorry," I smile, shrugging, "All sold out."

"I can see that," she comes around to the back of the table and picks up my large, plastic bag with all my empty containers and spare napkins. "Let's go."

"Shouldn't we put the table away? Snyder said -"

She rolls her eyes, "Screw Snyder. You've been on your feet for ages. Come on, lets get some grub!"

There's honestly no reluctance in my body as I follow her over to the line of hired food trucks. "What'd you fancy?" she asks me.

"Tacos?"

She orders four of my favourite tacos, two sodas and pays, ignoring my protests that I'll get it. We take the food away from the buzz and people, to a quieter spot outside the main building.
