Stand by Me

"And although many thoughts raced through our minds we barely spoke. We walked through thenight, and although none of us would admit it out loud, when we passed by "that horrible place" we held hands and tried to make as little noise as possible and made it back to Castle Rock a little past five o'clock on Sunday morning, the day before Labor Day"

The four boys crossed the bridge and arrived home. They formed a circle, and Teddy shook Gordie's hand, saying -Good luck, man- and then giving him a rather forceful slap on the shoulder.

Vern was a bit more emotional and, without hesitation, gave the skinny boy a hug. After an awkward moment, Gordie returned the hug. The chubby boy added -Write letters or make phone calls when you can- to which Gordie nodded.

They simply walked away, getting lost among the streets, and the two main friends walked until they reached the clubhouse, although neither of them went inside, they just stayed admiring their small town from above.

Chris asked - I'm never gonna get out of this town, am I, Gordie?- he turned to look at him and replied - You can do anything you want, man...-

The blond boy looked at him and responded -Yeah, sure... and you... what will you do?- Gordie shrugged and replied -I don't know... Should I Stay Or Should I Go?... If I go there will be trouble, and if I stay it will be double-

His friend replied without hesitation -Well, whatever... stand by me- and extended his fist. Gordie, with a genuine smile, bumped it.

They both stared at each other.

" --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------"

"--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "

"---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------"

Gordie suddenly heard a noise he recognized; it was his family's car approaching on the back road.

Without hesitation, he started running down the hill, yelling -MOM... MOM, WAIT...- until, in a moment of utter desperation, he threw his backpack to the ground and ran even faster.

Even so, he couldn't catch the car. Gordie fell to his knees on the road, just watching it drive away.

But suddenly, the car stopped. Gordie quickly got to his feet and ran toward it, wearing nothing but his baseball cap. He got in through the passenger door, and almost immediately the car started up again.

Out of breath, tired, and with an empty stomach, he leaned back in the seat and saw Chris in the rearview mirror next to the "Welcome to Castle Rock" sign, holding his forgotten backpack and waving goodbye.

"God, how I wish I could say that was the last time I saw my friend... but it wasn't"

A bit short, I know, but it REALLY needs to be separate from the rest, trust me.
