That horrible place
Chris gets up from his seat and walks back to the campfire, sitting next to Gordie, who was still nervously staring at the fire.
The blond waits for the other to be ready to talk and doesn't pressure him, finally, Gordie announces, -I didn't cry at Denny's funeral, I miss him, Chris, I really miss him- To which his friend only responds sympathetically -I know. Go back to sleep-
And he walks back to the distant log, from where the faint glow of the lights from the nearby town could be seen.
But Gordie, without thinking twice, gets up and sits next to his friend.
They started talking about school, their families, and then Chris started crying over Ms. Simons's skirt.
Chris tearfully said, -I just wish, I could go to some place where nobody knows me- but Gordie immediately rebuked him -Don't even say... NOT EVEN JOKING-
And with tears in his eyes, he continued -It must be horrible, being away from everything you know and love, with strangers, and not even being able to say your name-
The blond, visibly shaken, asked -What are you...?- but was interrupted by the shouts of another of his friends.
Teddy thrashed around, screaming -NO... NO DAD... PLEASE, NOT AGAIN... NO...- Chris and Gordie rushed over to try to calm him down before he rolled into the fire.
They started shaking him, and he woke up and started walking away from them, scared... and for some strange reason, their first impulse wasn't to touch his face, but to adjust the waistband of his pants.
Once he calmed down a little more, Chris handed him his glasses, which miraculously didn't break or fall into the fire.
Teddy quickly excused himself -It was just a...- but Gordie ended up killing him –Nightmare-
The boy with glasses turns to look at Chris and notices he'd been crying, but he just nods.
When another voice says -Yeah, me too...- everyone turns to look at the fourth boy, Gordie asks -Vern?-
He nods and asks -Can you help me? Shadow people visit - Teddy replies, amused, though somewhat hurtfully -Get you up? Do you think we have a tow truck?-
But they ignored him, he was clearly trying to divert attention to a fight, but they didn't blame him for trying.
They help their friend sit down, and Vern moves his arms to loosen them up, looks behind them, and says -Thanks, it's because of that horrible place, Mom always warned me not to go near here... Too many kids go missing, that's why she left-
Teddy, still angry because they saw him in his moment of weakness, adds -My cousin Went lives there... He's an idiot, never knows when to shut up... I hope he's next-
Chris says -My sister moved there with her boyfriend after Dad kicked her out... She's stupid, she only traded one jerk for another-
The three of them stare at Gordie, who simply looks down at the ground, not wanting to talk about it.
Noticing their discomfort, Chris comments -Well, it looks like no one's going to sleep tonight- as he throws another branch into the fire.
Vern asks -So what the heck is Goofy?-
Okay, I know it's a bit short compared to the others, but this should be separated from the next part for consistency.
Now, I clearly wasn't as obvious in "Scarlet Fever" as I had thought, but I hope you now understand where these four fools went camping.
