On a roll
(Center shot of adult Max/Gillian Jacobs)
The alarm clock rings and she opens her eyes. She is then seen in the shower with water cascading over her head, while the back of a Black man covered in soap is visible behind her.
Then she stands in front of a mirror, getting ready in sober brown clothes with her hair pulled back, while the man, in his underwear, picks up clothes from the floor and puts them in a basket.
Max, wearing an apron, stands in front of a stove, fiddling with pots and pans. He then walks over and sits at a table with a tray of plates. A caramel-skinned boy with a red afro, sitting to his right, exclaims in amazement -Ahhh!- A light hazel-skinned girl with curly black hair, sitting to his left, sighs wearily -Waffles, like every Tuesday-
Then she is standing in a courtyard. In the background, children can be seen riding bicycles, and a Black man is adjusting a boy's helmet, saying -Make sure it fits snugly-
The boy answers boredly –Okay- The man then looks at the girl and says, annoyed -And you'd better not find out you left him behind again, young lady- To which the girl replies irritably -Yes... I won't do it again- rolling her eyes.
Later, Max was driving a car with the man beside her. The car stops, and he gets out and says a simple -Good luck- She responds with a wave of her hand without turning to look at him.
She was in a small cubicle, typing on a computer, with a kitten calendar on the wall and Newton's balls moving on the desk.
Then she was on what looked like a park bench, chewing a sandwich with a cigarette between her fingers.
She's typing again in the cubicle, then she's in the car. It's almost mid-afternoon. She stops in front of a supermarket, and the Black man gets in and puts several bags in the back.
Max was still behind the wheel as he loaded the bikes onto the roof of the car and asked, -How was school?- The children answered in unison –Good-
He asked again -Did you have fun at the play center?- to which they both replied –Yes-
Then they were sitting on a sofa and the children were lying on the floor, eating from Chinese takeout boxes.
A mirror on the wall showed them watching the scene where the Jedi drew their classic green and blue lightsabers, while Darth Maul unfurled his double-bladed red lightsaber.
But the family didn't seem impressed; they even looked bored. The boy was even surreptitiously feeding some of his sweet and sour chicken to the dog sitting next to him.
Then Max watches the news, where he hears – with this, that makes 7 children missing in Castle County, Maine, specifically in... – but the television is drowned out by the screams of children fighting over a teddy bear.
The girl says – no, it's mine... I'm not lending it to you – and they struggle, while the boy replies – I need it to complete the great journey... and you're too old now-
The man, who had his back to them, washing dishes, says – that's enough... it's hers, use one of yours – but the boy replies –I can't, I only have grizzlies and pandas... you both must be polar bears-
The man asks – why? Will they go to a very cold place? - but the caramel-skinned boy with fine features and a reddish afro replies -No, it's just that if another type of bear goes, their little bears will be mixed breeds and the other little bears will laugh at them for their strange fur- with regret.
He freezes for a second and then says -I'll worry about that later... give her the bear, you don't even use your toys anymore, look at it, it's covered in dust-
