SCARLET FEVER

The four boys arrived at a small lake and found some large branches arranged around the remains of what could only be a campfire, judging by the ashes and burnt branches, it had clearly just been used by some campers.

They sat down on them, and Chris commented -I think we should camp here- which everyone agreed with.

Teddy added -Yeah, my feet are totally ground up- as he took off his shoes.

Vern asked -So where are we?- Gordie opened his backpack and commented -Well, if we cross the bridge, that means we're past Chester's Mill, so we must be in...- and suddenly he went completely silent.

Chris looks at him strangely, ponders his words, and standing up, says -Get up, we'll camp somewhere else, there's still half an hour of light left-

Teddy asks -Are you crazy? We won't see anything in the dark- Vern joins in and comments -I'm starving, friends, seriously. I think if I don't eat something soon, I'm going to...-

But Chris yells -SHUT UP, VERN... I said we're leaving, period- addressing Teddy, who angrily replies -Not even God the Father will make me get off this log until it's dawn, Chambers-

The atmosphere becomes denser, until Gordie indifferently murmurs -Let's stay- Everyone turns to look at him.

When he didn't say anything else, everyone just shrugged and started getting everything ready for camping.

Chris started gathering firewood while still looking worriedly at Gordie.

The awkward moment where Vern almost went without dinner.

Gordie then told his story about Lardass Hogan, followed by Teddy's "peculiar" suggestions on how to continue the story.

They then chatted about what Goofy is.

Then they all decided to go to sleep with the campfire still lit. As he entered the realm of dreams, Gordie's mind slowly began to blur the line between memories and dreams.

Gordie, visibly tired, finished packing his backpack. His father, angrily, asks -Are you done yet?... I'm running late for work-

His son mentions -Dad, I'm not feeling well today- but the man doesn't even look at him when he asks -Doesn't this have anything to do with that black eye from the other day?-

Gordie replies disdainfully -He's just a jerk- His father replies in a curiously similar tone, -You'll have to confront him sooner or later-

His son says, shocked—he's 15 centimeters taller than me and could probably lift me onto his shoulders—the father, as if he didn't hear or didn't care to hear, says -Denny wouldn't have been scared, he would have...-

But he doesn't finish his sentence, because when he finally turns to look at his son, he steps forward and holds him in his arms just before he faints.

Mr. LaChance says, frightened -Gordon... GORDON... for God's sake, you're burning up- and proceeds to shout for his wife, while noticing something strange on his son's neck, unbuttoning his shirt and seeing many welts on his skin.

Gordie slowly opens his eyes. He's in his room, and the sun outside is very intense. He hears a strange voice on the other side of the door saying -It'll be better now... I just took the medication, and PLEASE, don't forget what I told you-

He hears his father say -Thank you, doctor...- Then everything remains silent until he hears shouts from downstairs, his father asking -ARE YOU HAPPY NOW?-
