If you could, you would give it to me

Will looked at me with an expression of annoyance, slight anger and resignation, he finally gathered his courage and got out of the taxi to walk to the ramshackle house.

He knocked on the door and a few moments later the door was opened by an older man that Will could barely recognize, who upon seeing him smiled and said –hello son- and opened the screen to let him in.

Will entered the house and asked –what do you want?- this made the smile on the older man's face falter for a moment and he asked –is this how you say hello now?-

The son replies -well, then you want to take the long way- as he walks into the house.

Lonnie says –I'll never understand the things you say– in a disdainful tone, then he said –come on, go ahead... sit down, do you have a drink... or?-

The son reluctantly sits down on a couch and replies –no thanks, and in case you forgot, yes, I'm old enough–

The father says –better this way... and how have you been? How was college? Any special girl in your life?-

Will, already with hints of annoyance in his tone, asks –and now you're going to pretend that any of that matters to you?-

Lonnie looks at him annoyed, but hiding it as best he can, asks –do you still watch the Indians?-

The youngest asks angrily –did you call me to talk about baseball?... I've never seen them in my life- his father then answers –that's a lie, I took you and Jonathan to the games, we always had a great time...-

Will stands up and says furious –yes... and do you know what we liked the most?- he walks a couple of steps towards Lonnie and finishes –that you ALWAYS went to get drunk with your friends and we lost sight of you for HOURS-

Lonnie also stands up and reproaches him –don't talk to me like that, brat- in an annoyed tone.

Who knows what exactly he expected to happen, but Will kept the angry look in his eyes and asked -am I supposed to be scared? If I was 9 years younger maybe I would- and took another step forward.

The father looked at him well and with a small smile put a hand on his arm and said -you finally grew up a little huh?... and I missed it- with a small tone of melancholy.

Will clenching his fists says very annoyed -I already said why you wanted to see me-

Lonnie sighs and answers –I need your help...-

Will immediately said –I don't have any money anymore, it all went to the registration fees...- but Lonnie asked offended –when the hell have I asked you for money?-

To which Will, raising his hands, says sarcastically –taking advantage of my supposed death for a lawsuit, doesn't that count?-

Lonnie sighs again and holding his head says –I have terminal kidney disease...- that sentence left the whole room in absolute silence.

Which was broken by Will, who put a hand to his mouth and started making noises, his father says with discomfort –look, I wouldn't ask you this if not...-

But Will interrupts him with his laughter that he can't contain anymore, Lonnie completely furious slams him against the wall and asks –what the hell are you laughing at?-

Will abruptly brushes him off and replies –I laugh that if you had bothered to visit me ONE time out of all the times I was in the hospital, you would know that I am classified as "permanently deferred"...-

Lonnie recoiled at the words and Will clarified –it means that my body is a toxic waste dump... I am not even allowed to donate blood-

After taking a breath he continues in a slightly calmer tone –as soon as they type my name into the computer all the alarms will go off-

The father sits down and says -I see...- and opens a drawer.

The son asks - can I go now? - in an indecipherable tone, while watching him take a bottle of pills out of the drawer.

Lonnie disdainfully says -yes, get out- Will turns around and heads for the door, but stops and turns to look at him to say -and please don't try it with Jonathan because you will only get...-

But he answers –I'm desperate, but I'm not stupid... the last thing I need now is to hear her whimpering- while taking 5 pills and drinking them with a swig of beer.

Will says angrily –you shouldn't take so many... and even less with alcohol- but Lonnie looks at him and asks angrily –weren't you just leaving?-

The son remains silent for a moment, but finally turns around to leave, opens the door and Lonnie says –wait...-

Will turns around again and Lonnie finishes -... the car outside is yours... take it- he asks dismayed -what?-

Lonnie answers -take it as many belated birthday presents- Will angrily says -I don't want your...-

But before he can finish Lonnie lashes out -they're going to repossess it in 3 days, it's better if it's not here- Will comments -you'll get into trouble-

His father shrugs and says –if you want to sue a dying man in a process that will take twice as long as I have left... go ahead- with a bitter laugh.

Will with a hint of sorrow and guilt says –you don't have to...- but Lonnie rolls his eyes and says –we both know that, if you could, you would give it to me - with a sour smile.

His son now angrily leaves the house and slams the door.

He walked past the car as he left, stopped and thought for a moment, then got into the car. He wasn't even sure why he did it, maybe out of curiosity.

It was much cleaner than it looked, much cleaner than the house at least, so when he saw the front of the house he noticed that there were full garbage bags next to the dumpster.

There were no keys in the ignition or on the visor, he opened the glove compartment and there they were, along with some papers... and a gun, apparently he didn't take long to replace the one Jonathan stole from him.

Will sighs tiredly and tries to start the car, it didn't work, he tried again and it didn't work, he promised himself to do it just one more time and it didn't work.

He was about to open the door and leave imagining Lonnie laughing inside the house, but out of stubbornness he did it one more time... and the engine came to life this time.

3 hours later, she got out of her car at the UIC dorms, walked onto campus and there was a guy and a girl sitting at a table chatting, when she saw him she said –hiii that Liam...- and waved her hand calling him.

Liam walked over to them and waved his keys saying with a smile –we have a car now-

The guy laughed and replied –hahaha, typical gift from an absent father hahaha- then she asked him –well don't leave us in the dark... money or kidney?-

Liam says -kidney- the guy points at her and says -I told you so- to which she shrugs, then he continues -do you want to go out with us?... invite "this one"-

The guy in question refuses and says -no thanks, I'd rather read these papers, I don't want any unexpected surprises- pointing at the car papers.

Liam enters his bedroom and puts the papers on the table, among them a leather notebook that he had not seen before stands out, he takes it and begins to read.

Sorry if it took me longer than expected, I changed my laptop this Christmas and the bastards at Microsoft only gave me a week's trial with the Office, so I'm writing this in Outlook, I'm not giving them my money, they can go to hell.

I decided to give Lonnie his own story, I hope you like it.
