I was halfway through unpacking my clothes from my suitcase with Jess when I decided that I should take a break. I could feel the tension between us as I grabbed a pair of black heels and placed them onto a shoe rack before taking a seat on the side of my bed.
Jess was just coming back from my wardrobe when she stopped at the edge of the suitcase and stared confused at the base. From her reflection in the mirror, I could tell she looked worried when I turned around and asked her what was going on.
My heart had felt as if it sunk to my feet quite rapidly as Jess pulled out the necklace from the bag. As her finger was caught between the gold chain, the charm from the bottom of it swung from side to side, as the heartbreaking memory enchanted me.
I could feel my eyes beginning to water as my throat began to become drier as the seconds passed by. Chad's angelic tone rushed through my mind as the memories of the night before The Brownlow's were vividly in my mind.
"Of course Carmen, only a real man respects his queen, no matter what happens, through the good and through the bad". He said tenderly as he caressed my hair and gently put the chain around me as the cold yet beautiful charm leant against the open space of my chest.
"Carmen, it isn't like you to leave jewellery on the bottom of your clothes." Jessica remarked cheekily as I was distracted from my thoughts about Chad and bought back to reality.
"Sorry, did you say something Jess?" I asked blankly as she rolled her eyes then let out a slight chuckle.
"I was talking about this necklace I found like right on the bottom of the bag. I just thought it was strange to find it not really protected."
"Oh yeah sorry. I guess I just somehow forgot." I mumbled as Jessica looked up at me and moved closer towards me still holding the necklace. The closer she got to me, the more colder I was feeling at the moment. Jessica paused in her step and then held out her hand, allowing for the cold chain to drop gently in my hands.
I softly clasped my hand on the cold metal of the necklace before opening it up, admiring the detail of charm in sadness. I looked carefully at the shiny chain that had attached onto a silver moon crescent aswell as a sparkling purple magic ball. Desperately wanting to hold my emotions together, I knew that was a highly impossible thing to achieve as a tear slowly rolled down my cheek. Jessica took a seat next to me as a flood of tears began to stream down my cheeks.
"Uh Carmen, why are you upset? Has something happened? Did Chad say something to you?" She asked concerned as I let out a pathetic attempt of a sigh.
"This chain, this chain is the only damn thing I have of him. Jess, it's my fault, everything is my fault."
"Wait, sorry I don't actually understand what's going on. What about that chain? What's your fault?"
"Do you want to know the real reason why I came a week earlier from Melbourne than I was meant to?"
"Carmen please, please you're really scaring me."
"We're no longer in a relationship anymore Jess. Whatever everybody thought we were, isn't happening anymore and won't happen for a long time now. Jessica, he broke up with me."
"Oh god no. Carmen, I'm really sorry to hear that -"
"He found out that I was cheating on him and just thinking about gives me so much pain. I didn't know I was capable of causing so much heartbreak to one of the people I truly cared for in my life. Just seeing Chad's face filled with disgust was purely terrifying and it makes it even worse that I was the one to cause this mess."
