Chris' POV
I paced up and down the landing, watching PJ and Dan kneeling beside Phil.
Poor guy.
I stopped for a moment to look at Dan. His eyes were equally bloodshot to Phil's his face almost as pale. He looked so ill and tired, I just wanted to send him straight to bed again.
Fuck, I thought. That must have been one huge argument if it caused Phil to storm out on Dan.
Whatever happened, the end result was an unconcious Phil, and an ambulance on the way. I looked up from where I stood to the landing above.
Shit, that looked like a huge distance from the staircase to the floor.
I was worried. Really worried. Phil was one of my best mates beside PJ, and I much much much prefered Phil over Dan. I always had done.
Why couldn't Dan have fallen instead?
PJ started nervously fiddling with his phone as we waited for the ambulance to turn up. Dan just sat, staring at Phil's face with a mix of sadness and fear and anger.
Was he angry with himself?
He'd better bloody be.
He caused Phil to storm out, he must have said some nasty things to do that.
I sighed and leaned against the banister, collecting my thoughts silently.
BRRINNGGG
Dan jumped out of his skin, and leaped up, dashing down the remaining stairs to get the door. When he was gone, PJ turned to me.
"What do you think the argument was about, Chris?" He asked.
"I don't know, it could have been a out anything, really," I sighed.
"Yeahh..."
"PJ," I began. "Don't you think Dan must have said some pretty nasty stuff to Phil to get him to storm out? I mean, Phil's a really forgiving guy, so I mean..."
"I was thinking that too. So, like, they have the argument and then Dan says some stuff and Phil runs off, or Dan kicked Phil out on purpose." PJ contemplated.
"Dan seems the kind of asshole to do that. I reckon this is mostly his fault. I said angrily.
And just a few seconds later, Dan appeared beside me.
"They're ready for him." Dan said, his voice raspy.
I looked at PJ.
Had he heard what I'd said about him?
I really hope not.
Dan'S POV
I yanked open the front door to see a woman standing there in a nurse's uniform. She had a kind, round face and short black hair and she appeared to be in her late thirties.
"Hello, where's the patient?" She asked in a soft voice.
"Just on the second landing upstairs," I said quickly. She nodded and turned back to the ambulance to get her equipment. I rushed upstairs again only to stop in my tracks halfway up. I could hear PJ and Chris talking.
"PJ, don't you think Dan must have said some pretty nasty stuff to Phil to get him to storm out? I mean, phil's a really forgiving guy, so I mean..."
"I was thinking that too. So, like, they have the argument and then Dan says some stuff and Phil runs off, or Dan kicked Phil out on purpose."
"Dan seems the kind of asshole to do that. I reckon this is mostly his fault."
I stiffened at Chris' words.
"....kind of asshole to do that. I reckon this is mostly his fault."
"...mostly his fault..."
Mostly my fault.
"Where is he?" the nurse said from behind him.
I jumped.
"O-Ohh... I, um... He's just up here," I said, walking up ahead in front of her. She saw Phil and immediately set to work, inspecting him, but I wasn't watching her. I was watching Chris.
He gave PJ an awkward look, probably thinking if I'd heard him or not.
I had.
And it hurt like no other words i'd ever heard.
"So where did this young man fall from? I presume up there?" The nurse said, pointing at the upper landing.
"Yes, that's right." said Pj.
"Right, I'll go and fetch help from the ambulance and a stretcher. He looks badly damaged..."
The nurse turned and trotted down the stairs, leaving us three alone.
I looked at Chris.
"...mostly his fault..."
"...the kind of asshole to do that..."
"...mostly his fault..."
Mostly his fault.
Mostly my fault.
I couldn't hold it in any longer. Chris was right, it was my fault, and now Phil was harmed and it was all from my anger.
I crouched down over Phil, my face bent over his so Chris and PJ couldn't see.
And my tears began to fall onto Phil's ghostly cheeks.
A/N ; ive decided to make my chapters longer !! i hope you'll prefer me writing like that.
