{A FEW DAYS LATER}

Nurse Hadley (Sarah)'s POV

"Morning, Jess," I said reluctantly to the new surly receptionist who had just recently been given the morning shift.

"Hi." She returned, grumpily.

Jess was the receptionist who had dealt with Dan's friends when they were wondering were Dan was a few days ago, when they first arrived. I knew their names now. Christopher and PJ. Dan had told me their names.

I had spent a lot of time with that young man over the last few days. I first saw him when I arrived at his apartment to tend to his best friend Phil, who had fallen over a banister onto a hard wooden floor a landing below. He had spent the journey leaning over Phil, whispering to him.

They seemed extremely close and I had been working so hard over the last few days, researching with my collegues to find out how we could awake Phil as quickly as possible from his extreme coma.

Because Dan was deterioating fast.

He'd spent an entire three days in that little room with Phil, gazing at him, talking to him.

I was even standing outside the door once, about to enter, when I heard Dan singing quietly and recognized the song immediately.

"Mmbaby can't you see,

I'm calling,

A guy like you,

Should wear a warning,

It's dangerous,

I'm falling..."

By the second day of Dan staying in the hospital room, I was so fearful of Dan's back aching from sleeping in that awful chair, I ordered a bed to be put in beside Phil's and the monitors to be rearranged so the bed would fit in snugly.

Once or twice a day, Christopher and PJ would pop in for half an hour at a time, so visit Dan and see how Phil was.

Everytime they approached me, they both had a small glint of hope in their eyes, which I had to residedly squash whenever I told them,

"No, sorry boys. Nothing new with Phil, I'm afraid. I'm so incredibly sorry."

I hated it. I hated telling people bad news so much. I hated seeing the sadness in their eyes. I could hardly cope.

It was the worst thing with being a nurse.

Dan was grateful of my help and told me so every day.

"Thank you so much for everything Sarah."

"It's fine, love, it's fine."
