I saw mom for a second. She had her chocolate brown hair in a ponytail, and her eyes were gorgeous blue. She was wearing a black dress. She smiled at me and put out her arms for a hug.
Her face was a lot like Kate's. I ran for the hug but get passed mom like a ghost. Her back was facing me now, but she didn't turn back. I looked over her shoulder to see a small boy with brown hair and blue-green eyes running toward her. He jumped in mom's arms as she kissed his cheek and said: "You were born to lead, Jason."
I couldn't breathe anymore. That's when I fell to the ground, looking at the figure of mom and me before I collapsed.
"MOM!" I shouted.
"I don't think so."
I blinked upward into Selena's face. I was in a glaringly bright room with puke-green walls and a tiled floor.
"Huh?" I said.
"You called me mom. I said 'I don't think so'"
"Sorry," I said, "The Dream."
Selena smiled. She looked like a little kid with a guilty secret. But hey, she was guilty. I remembered that she is the one who brought me here.
The door opened. And dad entered the room. My father's expression was calm and content, as if he'd just come home from a lovely evening strolling through a garden full of flowers, enjoying the colors of nature.
First, he stood there, smiling. I couldn't say anything. But then I got the courage to say: "Why are you here dad? How are you here?"
"Selena," dad said, "Please."
She stood up and left the room without any word.
Dad came forward and sit on a chair next to me.
"I've been dreaming of that moment in years." He said, "Now it's true."
"You mean betraying us?" I glared at him.
"No." Dad said calmly, "I mean you being here finally."
"Why isn't Kate here by the way? I thought you would like her to be here before I come, so you two_"
"Hey," he grabbed my arm, "I never said she's always first. But things are different between you two. I know you're angry with her because she knew a secret before you_"
"How do you know that?" I stood up, "You've been watching us?"
"Of course. I must keep an eye on you!"
I shut my mouth, he was my father and I couldn't yell at him or hit him or even disagree with him. Fathers keep an eye on their children. Anyway, I shouldn't be there, in the place where I was. If my father was evil...
"Why are you so happy I'm here?" I asked, "I mean I'm not a Dark Wizard like you."
"That's a good question." Dad said, "But I can not answer this one. Please, come with me. You'll meet Dimetrios."
"Who?" But dad didn't answer me. I thought about who this Dimetrios could be. Then my father opened the door and gestured for me to get out of the room. I did what he asked. He led me to an empty chamber with white walls. Actually everything was white. There was one desk in the room and two chairs. I won't hide my feelings there, I was terrified. Whatever they were going to do to me, was obviously not good.
"Welcome Jace!" A voice said behind me. I turned but dad was no longer there. Instead was a man with salt-and-pepper hair and dark eyes. He had a muscular body and looked around 40. I think that was the famous Dimetrios.
"So good to see you up and about." He said smiling.
"Wish I could say the same." I grumbled.
"I bring good news." He went on, "I know you must be concerned about your sister Kate's well-being. But not to worry. Naturally we know where she's gone, so I'm figuring a half hour... an hour, tops."
"You're lying," I piped up, then immediately burst into giggles. "I can't believe I just said that. Me, to a figure of authority. Ha! But it's true. I can tell. Your mouth... it's really... tight!"
Dimetrios's smile fell. Now I was laughing, too. Our lives these days were all about traps. I looked at the man's eyes and I knew him immediately.
"You're..." I hesitated, "You're the man who chased us back in San Francisco!"
"Yes indeed." He said smiling again, "That was me."
"But what about Selena?" I asker suddenly, "Why did she run too? Why not catch me and bring me here from the first place?"
"You know," Dimetrios said taking a seat behind the desk, "plans must work perfectly. She needed to make you trust her. And yes! She didn't fail! I'm so proud of her."
"That's good." I said, "You can honor her and make her queen of this place."
"I won't go that far!"
"Yeah. Forget the second part. Stick with the first."
"You need to sit down and listen to me." Dimetrios said, "Calmly."
I took a seat and waited for him. He didn't seem that scary. I mean a regular man with dark powers. Nothing special!
"You must think we're monsters." Dimetrios began, "We're not. And we're not liars. You'll see. There is much to do, much to show you. Including a surprise or two. Come."
For a second I thought about Kate. What happened to her?
"You said you know where my sister is." I said, "But when I left she was trapped in the WI. Did she get out safe?"
Dimetrios nodded but said nothing. That's when an idea occurred to me.
"You burned the White Institute!" I shouted, "That was you! What do you call yourselves?"
"Enough questions!" Dimetrios glared at me, "Just keep your mouth shut if you want to know what happened to your sister and where she is."
I didn't have a choice. I watched as Dimetrios stood up and headed to the door. Then he turned back.
"You want to stay here?" He asked me, "Make yourself at home."
I didn't say anything. I just marched forward. Dimetrios took me to a big room. This one was also empty. Before I could ask anything he said: "Wait here, until_"
His phone vibrated in his pocket. He took it out and answered.
"No he's here... Very well then. Ok. I'll do it." He said before he looked at me and smiled.
"You. Stay here like I said."
And he shut the door behind him.
