On our Way

It was so hot I almost regret I agreed on going into the mountain. But of course, I had no choice. As we walked, I remembered what uncle Paolo told me in the WI, about how can I convince my father to control his powers. And if I could do that_ wait what? I am going there to find the crystals to heal Selena. But of course, I didn't tell anyone yet. And anyways, I have sworn I would kill my father with my own hands, just like he killed mom.

"What?" Jaz asked.

"What what?" I said.

"You're staring."

"No. I'm fine."

"Two miles to arrive!" Luke announced.

"Ohh..." Kate said, "I hate my life."

Luke and Jaz laughed. I just couldn't believe Luke was laughing after what had happened.
"What's so funny?" I asked.

Luke stared at me. "You ok, dude?"

"Maybe you're not seeing what I see. But Kate said the most serious thing in millennia. Our life sucks indeed!"

"Sorry?" Kate complained, but I glared at her.

"Just shut up." I said.

"Hey." Jaz put her hand on my shoulder, "We're just trying to forget the bad times. You know, smiling always helps."

"Stay out of this, girl." I said, "Smile does help you. You're not losing your family."

Jaz raised an eyebrow. "Well, excuse me for trying to sheer you up!"

She stomped off, plopping herself down at the edge of a long, rectan- gular rock, her back to us. I felt like a total jerk.
I hadn't meant to sound so sarcastic. Things were too tense. I was letting my nerves get the better of me.

"Uh-oh, Romeo," Luke whispered. "A little repair work needed."

I sat at the other end of the long rock. It was sunken in the center, so I had to perch carefully.
"Hey. I'm sorry."

"Hi, Sorry." She said, still looking the other way. "I'm Jasmine."

"I shouldn't have been such a jerk." I said.

"Yeah. You shouldn't have." Jaz replied, "But I guess your apology is accepted."

She turned toward me with a hint of a smile. Then her butt began sliding down into the center of the sunken rock.
I let myself slide, too, and we collided in the middle, laughing.
"First time I've ever been in a bathtub with a guy!" She said.
I could feel my face turning red.

"Guys, guys." Luke said, "We are really happy for you two, you know, being friends again and all. But we really need to get going."

Jaz blushed and put a strake of pink hair behind her ear. "Right." She cracked a smile, "Let's move."

I stood up and helped Jaz to her feet, too. I was glad she was with us. I mean she was sweet and kind and not annoying at all. But one simple thing still turned in my head.

"Hey, Jaz." I said taking her hand so she would stop. Luke and Kate stopped as well and looked at us. "Before, you know, we get there, I want to ask you a question." I looked at her and saw she waited. "Ok. Well, you were going to tell us what happens if we enter that mountain." I stopped, probably because I was nervous and afraid, "Would you please tell me?"

She took her hand softly out of mine and took a deep breath. "Look." She said, "The faster we get there, the more luckiest we are."

"But I want to know! I can't risk Kate and Luke's lives to just make Selena love me again! It will be so selfish."
That's when I knew I said too much.

Kate took a step forward. "What are you talking about?" She asked, her voice shaken, "You'll use the crystals on Selena, right?"

I didn't answer. "Right?" She asked again, louder.

Luke and Jaz were staring now. I think Luke was disappointed of me for thinking this way. I knew he loved Selena and all, and he made a relationship with Kate because he knew Selena would never love him after their powers were switched. But now I began to think that my idea could make him want to be with Selena again. I needed to put things right before it's too late.

"Of course not!" I said finally.

"You're lying." Luke glared at me.

"No I'm not!"

"Yes you are! You said you want to kill your father exactly before we started this quest. You put in mind that you would save Selena so she would have her old powers back, as a wizard of love. And she'll love you for real after then." Luke shook his head. "And you can't do that! I mean, it will be so unfair. I still love her." He looked at Kate. "Sorry, Kate. But I think you know that. Besides, I've told you my story!"

"Yes." Kate said, "And it was so painful, Luke. Ant yet you're telling me you're in love with your ex-enemy?"

I couldn't watch them shouting in each other's faces. So I turned back, wanting to conceal the real reason we were there for.

"Jace! Where are you going?" Jaz ran toward me. "You're giving up?"

I wanted to cry badly, but no, I had to stay strong.
"No." I shook my head. "Of course not. I mean, Luke's right. It will be unfair if I used the crystals on Selena. And anyway, I can't use them on dad."

"Why not?"

I told her about the wish Kate had made in front of Dimetrios and how it will put her life in danger if dad gets good powers.
"Oh." She said, "I never knew."

"Yeah. That's why I want to go back.
Luke? Kate? Come on we're_"

Luke and Kate were gone.
"Where are they?" I asked.

"I don't know!" Jaz replied, "They disappeared!"

"Oh no no no no... Selena!" I shouted.
"Selena!"

"Jace what's wrong with you?" Jaz yelled.

"They... They're gone!" I said almost crying.

"I can't sense them."

"What do you mean?"

"Wait."

Jaz closed her eyes and began breathing slowly. A tree began growing up in the sand right next to me. I didn't know how and why.

"You did that?" I asked Jaz who now, opened her eyes.

"Yep. Pretty smart huh?" She said.

I tried to put things together. Why would she grow a tree? How did she grow a tree? She grew a tree?

"You're telling me that you're_" I said.

"The Wizard of Nature." Jaz said.
