The car was hot and stuffy. Perspiration appeared in small beads all along the inspectors body. It formed on his forehead and ran down his face and neck in small rivulets. The back of his shirt was damp with sweat.
"Damn these police vehicles.......we should get the air conditioning fixed".
The other officers nodded in silence.
The young woman who had showed him the coordinates was sitting in the seat next to him. She was determined to avoid any form of physical contact with the sweaty mess maneuvering the vehicle. They had hurriedly packed all the resources that they had, papers, laptops.....guns. Now the entire police department of Methusla were speeding toward the city limits. They sped through the buildings and people. The sun had begun to set. However, the air was still humid. Methuslans rushed off in all directions. Some going to the city clubs that catered to the night life. Others going home to their loving families. While others prepared to spend the night in a dark, foggy corner of the city. No one seemed to notice the sixteen police vehicles speeding through the highway. Crime had become a part of life here.
The landscape began to change significantly as they neared city boundaries. Houses were sparse. Scattered away from each other. A vast contrast to the center of their planet. Here, bushes and shrubs seemed to take over most of the land. They were long and overgrown.
"And wild", thought the inspector.
"How much longer?", he asked the young woman.
She picked up the tiny screen resting on her lap and pressed a button. The screen glowed to life and displayed some numbers.
"Just ahead, turn right at Crescent Station", she answered.
He nodded grimly. He didn't know what he was up against. Until now, Alpha had become a sort of legend in all the police departments. But that all he was. Just a legend. "Until today", he thought grimly.
The sun had disappeared completely now. They drove silently through the trees. The headlights illuminating the gravel, dirt road ahead.
"Turn right here", the young woman announced, pointing at a dirt road, next to Crescent Station. He slowed the car and dimmed the lights. Instructing the other drivers to do the same.
"They can not know we're here", he spoke in to the radio.
"Yes sir", they all chimed in.
They pulled up to a driveway. The house was old. Moss covered most of the brick walls. The gardens were overgrown with weed and wild flowers. Dead leaves littered the steps to the door. All the windows were shut. And the lights were turned off. On the door step stood two teenagers. One was a young boy another a young girl with bright blue hair. They were both pale and scrawny. The boy was holding a yellow piece of paper. He knocked on the door. Then turned to look around as the dull glow of the headlights crept in to view. He looked momentarily confused.
Suddenly the old door opened and both were pulled in to the derelict house.
The inspector spoke in to the radio.
"They know we're here.
"I want you to surround the house. Nobody attack until I say so. Remember, we want them alive...they have two civilians", he stated grimly.
