Farkle
The light fluffiness of the pretzel melted in my mouth, I tasted a hint of saltiness licking my lips. This is one of the best things about living in New York City.
"Are you sure you don't want a pretzel?"
Riley nodded quickly.
"Yeah I'm still full from the pizza."
"But you didn't eat like any of the pizza."
"I have a small appetite."
"Are you sure you're okay? Because-"
"Farkle! I'm fine! Let's just go somewhere else."
I dropped the subject and sadly took another bite into the pretzel, it tasted cold and stale.
We walked all the way to Central Park, Riley picked a bench hidden in the trees a little.
"Woah."
I breathed.
"Yeah."
Riley whispered in agreement.
The trees had completely changed into their fall colors. The blood red, bursting orange and sunshine yellow leaves filled the sky's, it was almost like you were on a different planet. Then my cellphone rang. It caused Riley and I to jump and almost have heart attacks. I looked at the number, but I didn't recognize it.
"Hello?"
"Hi is this Frackle Minkus?"
A man with a really deep voice asked on the other end.
"It's Farkle and yes it is."
"Hi Farkle I'm one of the heads on the board of prison releases and your mother Jennifer Minkus is um well she's possibly being released."
I almost fainted right then and there, I could see Riley's face turn to concern.
"Farkle what's-"
I shushed her and turned back to the phone.
"But sir it's only been 2 months since her arrest."
I could hear the man getting frustrated with me.
"Look kid we never had actual proof your mother abused you. She's had good behavior and we don't see a need to keep her in. There'll be a trial next week to make the final decision, you against your mother."
I nodded, even though he couldn't see me and hung up the phone. Riley looked at me waiting for an answer, I could barely make my mouth move.
"M-my mother is being put on trial next week to be released from p-prison."
She didn't ask anymore questions. I expected her to get up and leave and just be done with all this crap. But instead Riley grabbed my face and pushed it towards her.
"Hey, hey look at me. Okay, you're gonna be fine. We'll all go to the trial and support you. Okay? We will win this."
I slowly nodded and hugged her. My face was nestled in her hair.
"Thank you."
I quietly whispered.
*next day*
Maya
Lucas, Farkle, Riley, Mr.Matthews, Mrs.Matthews and I sat in the Matthews living room, no one had said anything yet.
"Farkle I wish I could help you, but my firm isn't on this case."
He looked down defeated.
"But Mrs.Matthews can't he hire you privately?"
Lucas asked hopefully.
Mr.Matthews shook his head.
"He could, but it would cost a lot to take her away from the firm. And she's considered too involved in the case. It would just cause more of a mess."
I groaned.
Riley looked up suddenly.
"I-I do know one other firm in New York City."
Everyone turned their heads to me. I looked at them confused at first, then realized it.
"No. Never!"
"Maya please!"
Farkle begged, practically getting on his knees.
"No! Never will I ever go back there!"
"Technically you're not going back there, you're going back to him."
Riley said proudly.
I sighed and threw my hands up.
"Fine! I'll go. I'll go see my dad and beg him to represent Farkle in the case."
