Maya
The next morning I bolted from that place. Something about it made me feel all different inside and I didn't like it. My phone buzzed, it was a text from Lana asking why I wasn't at cheer yesterday. Sometimes it's best not to tell your best friend that you stole $500 and almost went to jail. Lana only knows the fake part of me, I can't show my true colors.
Why go to school when you can spend the day in the park? Plus I can't face Riley after our talk last night. We're not friends and never will be.
"Can I- uh sit here?"
I looked up at Lucas. I think that's the first sentence he's said to me that wasn't an insult.
"Yeah sure."
I scooted over and Lucas sat down. He put his arm on the back of the bench.
Just a little closer buddy I like to cuddle.
"Why aren't you at school?"
Lucas was actually talking to me. I was caught off guard.
"There's just a lot of people I didn't want to deal with I guess. And you?"
He shrugged a little.
"I don't know. What's the point in doing the right thing when no one cares?"
"What about your mom?"
Lucas's mom was the mom every kid dreamed of having. She always had candy in her purse, never yelled and bought anything you could ask for.
"She- uh well- it's kinda complicated."
I placed my hand on his.
"Don't worry I get it."
Riley
My dad is still making everyone stay after school today to do the project. Except Maya and Lucas aren't even here. Maya didn't even stay at my house this morning! That's fine though because she's rude and mean and annoying.
"God why aren't they here?!"
I yelled mostly to myself.
Farkle looked up from his book alarmed.
"Well uh you and I could start? Unless you don't want to. You know what I can just leave, this is really awkward."
I grabbed his arm, he tensed up a little.
I could see the pain on his face. I rolled up his sleeve to see a giant black and purple bruise. Across it was a jagged red scar.
"Farkle! What happened?!"
He grabbed my hand and pulled me closer.
"You can't tell anyone you saw this. Okay?"
He whispered in my ear.
I gulped. Was Farkle in a gang or something?
"But Farkle I-"
He let go.
"Riley you have to trust me. No one can know I have that."
I sighed and nodded.
"Okay."
Uh-oh....
What's the problem with Lucas's mom?
Where is Farkle getting all these bruises?!
