Chapter 3: First Day

Nicole's P.O.V.

I awoke to the annoying sound of my alarm clock going off. Another example of my living stereotype. I quickly rolled out of bed and shut off the hateful beep of the clock before walking into my bathroom, which was a muted shade of freshly painted purple that I had applied the day before, and looked in the mirror. Usually, I avoided looking at my reflection, but I felt a new sense of confidence for some reason.

My hair was a mess so I tore through the tangles with a brush and molded it into a messy side braid that hung over my right shoulder. I applied a bit of make-up carefully, making sure not to poke myself in the eye. I don't like to wear a lot, and usually don't like girls who cover themselves in it, but I did like how it amplified my eyes. I usually only use natural products as they work best with my skin.

After I finished with the make-up, I walked out of the bathroom and into my new closet. It didn't have much in it right now; I still had to unpack the boxes with most of my clothes. However, I did find my favourite pair of dark skinny jeans, a white tank top and a loose off shoulder black sweater. I quickly changed and went downstairs. I felt good today, I couldn't place the source of my happiness, but I knew it was a lot better than how resentful I had felt yesterday about the whole 'moving' fiasco. I guess I just needed a few personal touches to make it feel like home.

I could smell pancakes and eggs and other delicious, mouth-watering food as soon as I opend my door. Once I was at the end of the staircase, I grabbed my phone from the counter where it had been charging all night. I checked it, but Rhyan, my best friend from Ottawa, still hadn't messaged me back. I sat down at the kitchen island next to Sam and grabbed a couple pieces of toast and some scrambled eggs.

"Don't you want any bacon?" my brother asks me, holding a piece towards me with his small hands. My nose twitched and I sighed.

"I don't like bacon," I told Sam for the millionth time. It didn't stop him from looking at me like I was crazy.

"More for me!" he said, seeming offended but still with a small smile on his face.

"Be nice to your brother Nikki," my mother said with a smile, as she frantically organized her briefcase. A few crumbs from her breakfast fell onto her paper. She let out a frustrated sigh as she cleaned them.

"I am," I protested, still laughing, "Try not to be so stressed mom, I'm sure you'll do great today."

"I hope so," she replied just as the doorbell rang. I stood up and put my plate away, only taking the toast with me.

"That's probably Gavin. He offered to walk me to school."

"Who's Gavin?" my little brother asks curiously, a sarcastic smile evident on his face.

"None of your business," I mouthed. He sticks his tongue out at me as I walked away. I rolled my eyes.

"That's nice of him. I put all your school stuff by the door," My mom said with a confused look as I stood up. She probably wanted to know who Gavin was as well.

"Thanks Mom," I said as I walked down the long hallway into the entryway.

Pulling the door open, I picked up my blue bag off the chair, swinging it over my shoulder. I looked up and saw a girl standing in my doorway. She was a little taller than me, which wasn't very suprising since I'm only about five feet, four inches. She had pretty long dark blonde hair that had been curled and light brown eyes. She was wearing a pink and black jacket, unzipped, over a thin grey sweater, pink skinny jeans and grey knit boots that matched her sweater.

"Hi," the girl smiled with a bunch of enthusiasm. "My name is Amanda."

She stuck her hand out and I reached to shake it. Her nails were painted blue with white snowflakes. I wanted to hide mine which were unpainted and bitten down to the quick. I noticed right away how beautiful she was . Her bone structure was slim and narrow, yet still soft and her eyes were a cozy shade of brown that reminded me of hot chocolate.
