Chapter 35- There's a first for everything

Nicole

I woke up early the next morning on the couch. Nate was still asleep so I kissed his forehead and ran to the bathroom. I did my business, washed my hands and brushed my teeth.

Looking in the mirror I could tell something looked different but I couldn't tell what. My smile looked bigger; dimples more pronounced, more teeth showing. My eyes looked brighter; more intense, distracting, and icier than I had ever seen them. However, my hair was the same disaster. I brushed it out, uncurling the curls, tied it into a bun and left the room.

I decided I wasn't going to cry anymore. Sam... well he was better where he was. There was nothing I could but move on. My nightmares would torment me enough during the night, I couldn't torment myself thinking about it in the day.

I walked past Nate and into the kitchen. I decided to make breakfast for everyone; my way of saying thank you for everything they had done for me. I made bacon, pancakes, toast with butter, and hash brown patties.

I was a little concerned about using so much food but we were going on more food runs over the next few days anyway. Besides, I didn't use even close to all of it.

Jesse was the first one awake.

"That smells great Nick!" Jesse says joining me in the kitchen.

"Thanks, I put a lot of effort into it," I joke and start washing my hands.

"As long as there's no blood sweat or tears in it, I'm sure it will be fantastic," he says and I snort at how corny he is. I could see why Matt fell for him.

"Here," I laugh and shove a plate of food at him.

"Thank you my darling," he says as he takes a plate and quickly kisses me on the cheek. I flick the water off my fingers at him. "Hey!" he shouts.

"You hitting on my girl, Jes?" Nate asks as he enters the room, a smile playing on his lips. Jesse just laughs at him. "Because if you are, we got a problem; I'm pretty protective of her."

"Nawh man, I don't swing that way," Jesse says, making Nate laugh like I'd never seen. He must be in a great mood.

"Good," he says, through the laughs, now standing by my side. I smiled and handed him a plate. "Morning beautiful." He kissed the top of my head and joined Jesse at the table.

I went upstairs and woke everyone up. They followed me downstairs and took in all the food. Everyone was more than happy to dig in and say thanks.

After eating everyone went their separate ways; Gavin and Liam went on patrol, Jesse took Katie and Amanda to look for fire wood and Brittany was still asleep.

So that left me and Nate alone in the kitchen.

"So, what happened to Matt?" Nate asks and I know he needs an answer. I take a deep breath.

"Well, when I woke up from my nap, Sam was outside with Matt. But then things went wrong. Sam stopped kicking the ball around and Matt and I ran to him. He... he started coughing up blood and he... he died... But then he sat upright and attacked Matt. I got scared and ran into the house. I grabbed a knife and went back out, I couldn't see Sam anywhere. Suddenly he was there, out of nowhere. It startled me and I tripped, I cut my hand on the knife when I fell. He lost it after that, he attacked me and-" I was thankful when Nate interrupted. Sam was a sensitive subject and for now I just wanted to lock away the memory of him.

"Wait a minute; Sam attacked you because you were cut?" he asked. I shook my head; I had no idea why he attacked.

"I don't know," I reply. "I just figured that was the reason because he hadn't attacked me until I drew blood."
