Chapter 06: The Mall

Nate's P.O.V.

"You like her," said Gavin with a smirk.

We were sitting in his game room, watching a football game. There were chips and Pepsi on the table in front of us. Gavin's basement was like our own little man cave. Looking around, I could remember all the house parties he had thrown since high school started and a smile found its way onto my face as I remember Cole's face in the punch bowl last winter.

"Well, she's really...okay looking," I admit, turning my attention back to my best friend. He gives me a look that makes me want to laugh, but I hold my cool.

"Okay looking? Just say it, dude, she's hot," says Gavin, his smirk becoming ten times bigger.

"Don't you have a girlfriend?" I ask defensively. I knew he didn't mean anything by it but I really didn't want to have this conversation. He would have so much to say.

It had been ages since I asked a girl out. No relationship I had been in had gone past the third date, all the girls wanted around here was to get into bed. That's why I stopped looking for a girlfriend, I figured I would find what Gavin had when the time was right. Corny, I know.

"Yeah dude, and my girl is the hottest out of us all, but I'm just saying that you think Nicole is hot. Not for me," Gavin says with a sly smile.

"Whatever. What time do I have to pick her up?" I ask him, taking a drink of my pop.

Gavin thinks for a moment before then looking at his watch.

"In about five seconds," he states, making it difficult for me to not spew my drink all over the man cave.

"Crap! Call her and tell her I'll pick her up in ten minutes!" I say, jumping up from my chair. I chugged the rest of my pop, not wanting to waste Dr. Jefferson's hard earned money, and grabbed Gavin's arm.

"You're the one with her phone number!" protests Gavin. I remembered he was right. I didn't have time to call so I would just have to be really fast

"Fine!"

I start running up the stairs, leaping two at a time with Gavin in tow.

"Oh, and dude, don't crash," Gavin voiced his concern, stopping at his door.

"I'll try not to!" I yell, as I jump onto my bike. I speed off down the road and stop at the giant mini-mall.

I could feel my stomach turning at the thought of Nicole. I don't know what it was about her but she made me feel so nervous. The way her long brown hair hung in face, how her eyes contrasted her hair, how she was only tall enough to reach my chin. She seemed, well, perfect for me.

I jump off my bike, shaking away the thought of her pretty face, and ran into the store down to the biking isle. I raced past leather jackets and gloves, and spot a light blue helmet, the only one left.

I remember that Nicole's book bag was light blue, so I grabbed it off the shelf and took off toward the checkout. I practically run over some gangster teen as I slam the helmet onto the counter and try and catch my breath.

I slam down thirty dollars and try to will the checkout girl to go faster. I was supposed to pick up Nicole five minutes ago. Before she invaded my mind again I decided to focus on something else, anything else.

When I look up I see that the cashier is looking at me and smiling.

"So, how are you today?" she asks in a playful voice.

"Fine, but I really have to go!" I say, I hated when girls acted like that. People were all over guys for acting whoreish but what about when a girl did it? I sigh and run out with the twenty five dollar helmet in my hand.
