Chapter 40- You and I

Nate's POV

It was hard for me to get used to quiet. Nicole and I were zooming through the street, dodging debris and...bodies as we tried to get to the store as quickly as possible.

Gavin pulled up alongside us and I turned the engine off.

"I can't get through here, there is way too much stuff," Gavin says. Always the scholar.

"That's alright; we have the talkies," Nicole says. I turn to smile at her. She had her blue helmet on, but I couldn't find mine so I had no helmet. I was somehow sure I wouldn't be stopped by the cops. They'd have to be alive to pull me over.

"Alright, meet you there," I say, and Gavin simply nods. We continue down the street- all the while I'm thinking about Nicole and how much time we may have together. Only one thing I was sure of about my life so far: if Nicole wasn't in it, I wouldn't be either. She kept me going.

We got to the store in record time. When I rode my motorcycle, it was like I was molded to it. I've always loved riding motorcycles, ever since I was little and my dad took me out. Then my dad left, and I despised them. It was only when I got my licence that I knew I wanted to ride a motorcycle. With Nicole's arms wrapped around my waste, what else would I ever sanely ride? Let's just say it was an easy choice. Plus, we would never be stuck in a motorcycle like we would be the cab of a truck if it flipped.

"It's so dead," Nicole says. I laugh at the irony. Technically, if a few fleshers were here, it would be dead.

"I know," I say, and pull her closer. I didn't trust the emptiness around this place. I used a crowbar to pry open the automatic doors of the store; we had broken that long ago.

Once we finally got into the store, Nicole held my hand while I frantically grabbed things from shelves. Things at random, but I avoided a certain isle Liam would have ran too, because I don't think Nicole would be comfortable with me buying condoms; even if they were for Liam and his maybe pregnant girlfriend. This reminded me to pick up a few pregnancy tests. The one Katie had gotten earlier she lost in all the confusion, plus she was grieving Matt's death.

Nicole let go of my hand and wondered around the store. This was my chance. I casually walked to the pharmacy part of the store. I looked for a second before spotting them.

"I'm gonna go get the tools," Nicole says from behind me. Crap! I turn to look at her and her gaze falls to the box in my hand. A blush creeps into my cheeks.

"You're not getting them for us right?" she asks, her eyebrow cocked, her mouth slightly open in surprise.

"No, absolutely not, they're for Liam I swear!" I say, hoping she won't think that's creepy.

"Ooookay..." she replies, blushing as well. "I'm just gonna go get the stuff..."

"I'm not letting you out of my sight," I say fiercely.

"Come on Nate, it will make everything go faster. I do have the third talkie so I can talk to you." I hope Gavin will have my back, so I put the talkie to my lips and tune into his.

"Gavin, where are you man?"

"Hey, I'm five minutes away, but with all the debris I'll probably be ten."

"Having any trouble out there?" I ask, my gaze locked on the beautiful girl in front of me.

"A flesher or two but other than that it's okay. Nothing as far as I can see," Gavin informs us. I am surprised because I realie I hadn't seen a single flesher on the way up.
