Chapter 43- Happy Freaking Birthday

-Nicole-

Nate had taken off leaving me and Gavin following his dust trail up the street.

We pulled into the driveway and I could see Nate and Jesse holding hands on the step and a white bandage in between them. Nate took a quick glance at me as Gavin walked inside the house. I picked up the hockey bag containing his sword and felt my pocket. Reassured that I still had the ring, I walked through the door.

I heard footsteps behind me and I recognised them as Nate’s light walk. I turned to him awkwardly, my eyes looking anywhere but his face.

I had tried to do something nice for his birthday and ended up almost getting killed along with Gavin. I don’t even want to think about what would’ve happened if Nate hadn’t shown up when he did.

“Thank you,” I say, avoiding his gaze and trying to look small. I knew he was angry; I could feel it radiating off him in waves.

“Do you know how worried I was? Gone for four hours!? What were you thinking Nicole?!” he spits, and I flinch at his harsh tone. He had never spoken to me like this, even when we were fighting, no one had.

“I didn’t know it wasn’t safe-” I tried to explain. He held up his hand to tell me to shut up. I could feel the anger inside me boiling, my heart rate picking up.

“Not only did you leave the house, but you were in so much danger it’s a miracle you and Gavin survived!” he replies. I looked at him with hurt in my eyes. He had the nerve to say it’s a miracle I survived by going into town when he risked his life too?

“Last time I checked, I wasn’t the one who took on an entire street full of fleshers!” I yelled in his face. I knew I would regret it later but it felt right in the heat of the moment and made me feel better.

“Sorry?” he says sarcastically. Why was he acting like such a jerk? I hated it. “If I hadn’t done that, you would have still been there, probably dead!”

“Why are you so mad?” I ask. It was his turn to flinch now.

“I’m mad that you can’t go out of the house without getting hurt and almost dying!” he finally confesses. That is definitely not the right thing to say to your angry girlfriend. I give him a death stare.

“Is that my fault?” I ask, yelling once more.

“No, it’s not. But you sure as hell aren’t helping by sneaking out for no good reason!” he replies. Now he was yelling too and five bucks said we had woken up the whole house.

And no good reason!? He hadn’t even let me explain why I had gone into town in the first place. I take Gavin’s hockey bag off my shoulder and forcefully threw it at his feet. I half wished the sword would snap in half.

“No good reason!?” I ask, my voice going deathly quiet. “Maybe you’re right, I just went out to get a birthday present for an asshole. Happy freaking birthday!” I turned on my heel, not able the look at his face.

I stormed up the steps and into the living room to see everybody in the house looking at me, except for Nate, and Liam and Jesse who were on patrol tonight.

“So, I’m guessing you and Nate broke up. Hopefully it will be for good this time,” Brittany pipes up, a smirk on her face. I glare at her, wishing I could smack her.

“We didn’t break up again Brittany,” I correct her pointedly, deciding that I would probably just break my hand if I hit her.

“Too bad,” she sighs and walks off into the kitchen. I roll my eyes. My sympathy for her had run up long ago; probably around the time Cole was buried.
