Chapter 30- Little Talks

Nate

The ride home was completely terrible. I don't know how we didn't notice all the dead people on the way up, but as we drove back, we passed dozens of bodies. There were also people, if they even were people, like Ben; zombies, roaming the sidewalk. It didn't look like they were noticing that we were driving by, and I felt at least a bit better about being in a car opposed to walking right now.

Cole was moaning still, and was completely white, looking more like Ben every second. That got me thinking. How had Ben become what he became?

That day that Cole pushed me into the water and ripped open my knee, I got first aid supplies from Ben. He had been working that day. He was gonna come see us.

Somehow, between then and now, which had only been about a week, he had turned into something else entirely. What if that happened to all of us?

I looked at Gavin and he closed the window so that the others couldn't hear us.

"What do you think? Is he going to make it?" asks Gavin. I shake my head.

"There is no way in hell he can keep going after this. He's a dead man walking," I say, and hot tears spring to my eyes. I never liked Cole, and less so when he started going after Nicole, but nobody deserved this.

"If only my dad were here, he would know what to do," Gavin says, mostly to himself, slowing down. The last thing we needed was to flip the truck into a ditch.

"I promised him that he would live..." I say sadly. even as I had told him I didn't really believe it. Gavin glanced at me sadly.

"We can only do the best we can. None of us are doctors Nate," Gavin says. "But look around us, maybe it's for the better that he doesn't make it. I mean aren't you scared? There are dead people walking!"

"Don't talk like that man... You sound like... You know..."

"Don't worry mate, I have Amanda to live for and you have Nicole... kind of. But all he has is Brittany." He lowers his voice. "And that's not much."

"Well all we can do know is let what happens happen I guess," I say looking out the window at all the damage.

"I wish this whole weekend hadn't happened," says a sad looking Gavin.

I put my head against the dash.

"Me too," I say, and look out the window. I made eyes contact with a living dead guy and shivered. "Let's just get the hell home."

There was blood splattered all over the street, and Gavin and I were freaking out silently.

I figure we were all too focused on Cole to notice all the things around us, which were all gruesome and violent.

We passed this particular body. It was a figure laying down on the lawn of a white house. I looked closely at it and it looked to be the body of an old man, which was half eaten. Its legs were on the other side of the lawn and guts and organs were spilling out of him as he tried to weakly pull himself along the lawn.

The things I saw at that time would scar me forever. I have never been one to love gory shows on television or read horror novels, so I felt like a new born baby being exposed to all the evils the world had to offer at once.
