Chapter 37- torn

Nicole

“That’s amazing!” Brittany says. She was the first one to speak. Nate flashes a quick smile at her and I tense up. I still wasn’t really okay with their being friends. Something about my boyfriend being friends with a girl who was in love with him was oddly uncomfortable.

Nate noticed my unease and wrapped his arm around my shoulders; I snuggled into him and gave him a small smile.

“I don’t know; we have no idea how many Fleshers are there right now. Would it really be worth the risk?” I ask worriedly. Why he wanted us to do this, I had no idea.

“I know you’re nervous, but we’ll both have weapons, and Gavin will come too, this trip could be life or death,” Nate says not making me feel better; I simply nodded.

“Alright, we’ll go after supper,” Nate tells the room at large. Everyone nods, and Gavin and Amanda left together.

“What do you want babe?” Nate says turning to me and making me laugh.

“Just go fix something for yourself and I’ll have the same,” I say, too lazy to make food myself.

“Okay,” he smiles and walks into the kitchen.

I flopped on the couched and watched as Brittany grabbed Nate by the arm. I was about to storm into the kitchen and tell her to back off, but before I could, Nate took back his arm and Brittany left the room. Nate retuned a minute later with two bowls.

“Thank you,” I say as I stuff my face with beef ravioli. Nate smiled at my reaction.

“No problem,” Nate says as he turns on the TV. The news was on and the reporter was cowering under her desk in fear. She pointed the camera at herself, her makeup was smudged and her clothes ragged and torn. She held a knife in her other hand. There were strange noises coming from all around her.

“This will be my final segment,” She says sounding on the verge of tears. “These things are dangerous, and the only way to stop them completely is-” the camera falls and we could hear her screaming. The screen went black and never came back on.

“Well that’s reassuring…” I say, my voice trailing off.

Nate and I had lost our appetites after the news. I had forced down a few more bites but couldn’t stomach it. We put our food away for later and left the house with Gavin.

Someone had boarded up the many exists to the house and the only door was now through the basement and out the garage. One way in, one way out; I seemed to be the only one who thought this may cause a problem.

Gavin led us down to the field, leaving me and Nate to walk hand and hand. I realized we hadn’t kissed since the night before and I hoped he would change that soon.

“Okay,” Gavin said as he led us through a gate in the fence. “The fence is off and we want it on at all times so we gotta do this fast. For now, we're just gonna teach you the basics.”

I looked at Nate, scared I wouldn’t be able to do it. He gave me a reassuring smile and I looked back at Gavin.

“We’ll teach you with the gun last, because that’s probably the hardest,” He continued. “Now we don’t know exactly what kills them for good, but hitting them in the head seems to be working.”

“We also don’t know how this spreads so were gonna assume it’s like every zombie movie; in other words don’t get bit or scratched, and try not to get their blood in your mouth.” Nate pipes in.
