Chapter 24- Shattering

Nate's: P.O.V

Things started out so well. For instance, when Nicole walked eloquently down the carpeted stairs, my breath caught in my throat. She looked so damn beautiful. It was one of those cliche moments in which the beautiful makes her grand entrance slowly coming down the stairwell, leaving all admirers to stand in awe of the magnificence of true to life cliches. Poetic, really.

She had on a white, yellow and black strapless dress and a pair of yellow shoes to match. Her hair was straight and she had her bangs pulled back. I remembered the moments earlier in which she had tried so hard to cover up her scar, and I wondered why she had decided to give up.

She slowly and gracefully walked down the stairs and it seemed to take forever but I didn't mind, it gave me an excuse to stare at her. Once at the bottom, she looked at me.

"Hi Nick," I whispered. I would've and should've said it louder but I still didn't have much breath. Plus, I was terrified that if I had used a different volume my voice would crack and I would lose crucial cool-points with the pretty girl before me.

"Hi," she replied, making my who 'unable to breathe' problem even worse.

"Okay you two love birds," Gavin says. I remember suddenly that Nicole and I aren't the only two people in the world; I felt my face get warm. "It's time to go."

Gavin wrapped his arm around Amanda's shoulders and left. I felt like I should do something of that nature, but I wasn't bold enough to do that. Not yet anyway. I settled for holding her hand started to walk out the door.

"Wait, what about Sam?" Nicole suddenly asks stopping dead in her tracks.

"Already taken care of." I smile at her, to let her know I'm responsible. "He's with Brittany and Colton, we'll pick him up when we get back."

"I don't think I trust someone who hates me to watch my little brother for the night," Nicole states. I'm pretty sure she was unaware of the force at which she was squeezing my hand, but it let me know who would be opening those difficult jars in our future.

"Come on Nick," I smile at her, gently placing a loose strand of hair behind her ear. Smooth so far. "Brittany may be crazy, but she wouldn't do anything to hurt me, and she knows hurting Sam would hurt me. Besides, you deserve a night off."

"I guess you're right," Nicole agrees, still not sounding completely convinced. "Let's go have fun."

I took a deep breath and leaned down to kiss her forehead, which wasn't so far away now.

We walked out of the living room, past my sleeping dog and out through the door to the truck. I let go of her hand, sadly, and opened up the tailboard and climbed in. I then realized because of her outfit she might have trouble getting in. I decided to get out and help her but thought better of it and just held her hands and helped her in.

"I hope you don't mind." I nervously wipe my hands on my pants. They were shaky and sweaty and she wasn't making it any better by looking so beautiful. "I thought we could watch the stars on the way to the restaurant."

I shifted my head toward the cab to let her know what I meant. She looked at it then looked back at me and nervously laughed as she sat down. I laughed and followed her lead. "No, that will be amazing." Nicole blushed and I mentally gave myself a fist-bump because she wanted to be alone with me, like the creepy stalker I am. Really, I felt very weird about being excited for some alone time with the magnificent creature before, because I felt so out of her league it may have been laughable.
