Esme knocked on her sister's bedroom door then walked in solemnly.
'What are you up to?' she asked lying down on the bed next to her sister.
'Moping,' Ecie replied. 'You?'
'Moping,' Esme replied. 'It kind of sucks doesn't it?'
'Oh yeah,' Ecie nodded. 'It totally sucks.'
'Verd's leaving in a couple of days,' Esme said. 'I don't know how I'll cope with that.'
'Me neither,' Ecie sighed. 'It's so sad seeing everyone leave for college, and you're still here.'
'I know what you mean,' Esme said. 'I kind of wish that we were moving far away for college. I hate saying goodbye.'
'Same,' Ecie said. 'Thanksgiving is a long way off.'
'Yeah,' Esme nodded. 'What were you going to do tonight?'
'I was just going to lie here til I fell asleep,' Ecie replied yawning. 'I'm not too bothered about doing anything else.'
Esme nodded. 'I think I'm too depressed to do anything else.'
'Maybe we should hang out with Verd while we can,' Ecie suggested. 'He'll be gone in a couple days.'
'I suppose you're right,' Esme replied. 'But I can't be bothered.'
'Me neither,' Ecie said. 'I'll call him in like an hour and see if he can hangout for a couple of hours.'
'Are dreading leaving?' Ecie asked dipping her straw into her thick milkshake.
'Yeah,' Verde said nodding. 'It's like I thought this day would never come.'
'Are you all packed and stuff?' Esme asked.
'Yeah,' Verde replied. 'I finished packing a couple of days ago actually. I already sent most of my stuff across, so hopefully they'll arrive when I get there.'
'Rhode Island is so far away,' Esme said. 'It's like in the middle of nowhere.'
Verde laughed. 'I wish.'
'Did you and Ed make up yet?' Ecie asked. 'You know that he doesn't care about your parents or anything. He just wants to be with you.'
'Yeah we talked about it and stuff,' Verde replied. 'He said that he didn't want to spend the next four years without me, but I just told him that I still wasn't sure about my parents. I mean I really want to tell them, but I'm scared about what'll happen if I do.'
'Ed would go with you, you know,' Ecie said. 'He'd be there right by your side if you asked him.'
'Yeah Verd,' Esme chimed in. 'College is about discovering who you are and starting over. You don't want to start a new life without being honest with yourself, first.'
'I am being honest with myself,' Verde said. 'You guys are lucky that your parents are such cool people. They wouldn't care if you came out to them, they'd just be happy you were happy. My parents are so old fashioned and think it's something bad. I love my parents and I don't want them to disown me or anything.'
'Will you ever tell them?' Esme asked.
'I think I might,' Verde replied. 'When I'm thirty and I've moved out of their place.'
'Just as long as you're happy Verd,' Ecie sighed. 'It's been like four years already.'
'I know, I know,' Verde said. 'I'll tell them before I die.'
