Sarah's POV:

I lied on the sofa, half awake when my father entered the room. I could hear him on the phone speaking to my uncle. "Tommy I- Tommy. Tommy listens to me; he is the contractor. He's the contractor, okay?. I can't lose this job. I understand... Let's talk about this in the morning, okay? We'll talk about it in the morning. Alright. Goodnight".

Dad turned on the light, and I let out a small yawn, sitting up on the sofa. I got a glimpse of my father and welcomed him with a simple "Hey.

"Scoot," He said, I moved over to the left side of the sofa as he sat down next to me.

He looked tired and frustrated, so I came out with a simple "Fun day at work. Huh?".

"What are you still doing up?" He replied. "It's late."

"Oh, crud!" I said, making myself not swear. "What time is it?". I got up onto my knees and peered at the clock which hung above the sofa we were sitting on.

"It's way past your bedtime" He replied, still not looking at me.

I was relieved to see that it had not gone past midnight and told Dad that "It's still today."

I got off of the sofa and knelt down so that I could pick up a little white box by the side of the couch.

"I do not have the energy for this" Was all he said before I sat back on the sofa with him.

"Here," I said, holding out the box to him.

"What's this?" He asked, taking it from me.

"You're birthday" I replied, sitting back down so that I could see his reaction when he opens it.
He gave me a slight smile and then opened the top.

"You kept complaining about your broken watch... So I figured, you know". He pulled the watch out and placed it on his wrist. "You like it?" I asked.

"Honey, this is..." He started, tapping the watch and holding it to his ear. "What?" I asked. "It's nice but I- I think it's stuck. It's not -" He said.

A sudden surge of panic rushed through me, I leaned over and looked at the watch on his hand. "What? No, no, no, no" I said, before realizing he was joking. I pushed his wrist away and sat back down on the sofa. "Oh, ha, ha," I said sarcastically, lying down on my side again.

"Where did you get the money for this?" He asked. "Drugs," I said. "I sell hardcore drugs."

"Oh good," Dad said. "You can start helping out with the mortgage then." That was one of the best things about my father; he would always be able to laugh things off or play along with jokes.

"Stsh- yeah, you wish" Was my reply. Afterward, we just watched some TV, because all I remember after that was being woken up by my phone beside my bed.

I picked it up and held it to my ear. "Hello?" I asked. "Sarah, honey, I need to get your daddy on the phone." "Uncle Tommy, what time is it?". "I need to talk to your dad now. There's some-". Then the line went dead. "Uncle Tommy? Hello?" I asked, but no one answered.

I placed the phone back into its stand and got out of bed. "What was that all about?" I asked myself, looking into the mirror. I picked up the phone again and held it up to my ear "Phone's dead" I said, speaking to myself again. I went over to my desk and picked up the card I bought for my dad.

It was white with a green dinosaur saying "Congratulations." "Ah dang it. I forgot to give this to him". I opened it up and read the inside.

You're not a fossil (Yet). Happy Birthday).
