I was the first to climb up the ladder, and when I was up I removed the thin wooden lid off so that we could get through. "Now hold up. There's a patrol up ahead" I told them, seeing the soldiers pass through a couple yards away. I stayed on the ladder for a few more seconds, making sure there were no more soldiers around. "Alright, we're good. Come on up" I called out to them, climbing off of the ladder.

"C'mon kid" I said to Ellie as she climbed up. "Watch your step". I pushed the lid back over the top, making sure it was on there correctly. "This rain ain't gonna do us any good" I pointed out. "Holy shit... I'm actually outside" Ellie said. We all jumped down int the trenches, where it was even muddier. The path was pretty straight forward. There was a lorry which seemed to lead to the correct way. I came out through and was pushed down by someone. "Don't do anything stupid" A woman said.

I realized that we had been caught by some soldiers. "Move" A man said. Ellie and Tess came out of the lorry. "Turn around. On your knees" They told them. "You scan 'em. I'll call it in" The woman said. Ellie and Tess were on their knees like me. "Put your hands on your head" the man told Tess.

"This is Ramirez at Sector Twelve" The woman spoke into her radio. "Requesting pickup for three stragglers". "Understood".

"Look the other way" Tess told the man who was scanning her. "We can make this worth your while". "Shut up" He replied. "I'm getting tired of this shit" He said, scanning me. "Uh-hmm" The woman replied.

"What's the ETA?" He asked as he walked over to scan Ellie. "Couple a minutes". "Oh, man. Oh, man" Ellie said, suddenly stabbing him in the leg. "Sorry" She said, pulling the knife out. She leaped up to try and get the gun off of him, but he pushed her back. As he was about to shoot, I tackled the man, grabbing his gun and shooting him as Tess took the woman down.

"Oh... Oh, fuck" Ellie swore, shuffling back to sit straight. "I thought we were just gonna hold them up or something" She said, putting her knife back into her pocket. Tess picked up the scanner that the soldiers had used on all of us. "Oh, shit" Tess said, looking at the readings. "Look" She said, throwing it to me. I looked at the scanner, it had a clear reading: INFECTED

"Jesus Christ" I murmured. "Marlene set us up?" I asked, confused. "Why the hell are we smuggling an infected girl?" I spoke out of anger. "I'm not infected" She protested. "No? So was this lying?" I said, throwing it to her. "I can explain" She said, slightly worried. "You better explain fast" Tess said, walking over to us. Ellie pulled her sleeve up, revealing a large bite on her arm. "Look at this" She said.

"I don't care how you got infected" I replied. "It's three weeks old" Ellie insisted. "No. Everyone turns within two days. So you stop bullshitting" Tess said. "It's three weeks" She repeated. "I swear". "Why would she set you up?". I stared at her for a second, "I ain't buying it" I said, turning my back to her. I could see lights up ahead, it had to be the backup the soldier had asked for. "Oh, shit".

"Tess, run" I murmured. "RUN" I shouted as their truck got closer. "Go. GO! Move!" Tess shouted, getting Ellie onto her feet. We ran round the corner and jumped back down into the trenches.

I had landed on my feet, the rain poured harder, making it more difficult to see. "Holy shit" a man shouted. I crouched down to fit under the truck we had crossed through, I knew the backup would know we were around. "I got two dead uniforms. I repeat, I got two casualties in Sector Twelve. Requesting immediate backup". "Follow me. Quickly" Tess said to Ellie as she hid behind scraps of metal boards. I saw, up ahead, more trucks. "Alright, Ellie. When I give you the signal, we run" Tess instructed.

"Now. Run" She said quietly as she moved quickly to the next trench. "Stay away from those lights". The light beams hovered around us, they were large, and we were dead if we went anywhere near them. I followed Tess down the trenches, under pipes and over boxes, we didn't seem to be getting anywhere though. "Ellie, it's gonna be another sprint. You ready?" Tess asked, keeping her eyes on the lights. "Sure. Yeah" She said, keeping up. I shuffled through a pipe, though I could still see the lights near the other end, "Goddammit. They're everywhere".
