I pushed my weight on the metal gate which blocked us from the way it. After a few pushes it opened and we could get out. "Alright, they're gone" I said, checking through the gate. Ellie had sat done on a large rock to catch her breathe back. Tess looked at her and sighed. "Look- what was the plan?" She said in a more suttle tone. "Let's say that we deliver you to the Fireflies, what then?".
"Marlene... She said that they have their own little quarantine zone. With doctors there: still trying to find a cure". "Yeah, we've heard that before, huh, Tess?" I said, turning around. The girl, Ellie, sighed at me. "And that..." She shook her head before continuing. "Whatever happened to me is the key to finding a vaccine".
"Oh, Jesus" I said, turning my back to them again. "It's what she said" She added. "Oh, I'm sure she did". "Hey, fuck you, man" Ellie said, getting to her feet. "I didn't ask for this". "Me neither" I replied, walking past her and to Tess. "Tess, what the hell are we doing here?".
"What if it's true?" She said, staring me straight in the eyes. I looked at her and then Ellie. "I can't believe-" I said, stepping back. "What if, Joel?". "I mean we've come this far, let's just finish it" She proposed. I pulled her aside from where Ellie was and spoke in a lower tone, "Do I need to remind you what is out there?". Tess looked back at Ellie, "I get it" She said, walking off, Ellie followed her, watching my gaze as they walked off. I sighed, I knew I had to go forward with this even if I didn't want to.
"This way" Tess called out, walking forwards through the ankle deep water. "If we cut through downtown, we can hit the capitol building by sunrise". I knew it wasn't going to be a straight root, and the area we were in wasn't safe either, there was a broken bridge up ahead and you could see a large building leaning to the side as if it could fall at any moment.
We climbed over a car and then went under the broken bridge, we then had to climb up pieces of broken road and through more weeds. "Holy moley, I guess this is what these buildings look like up close" Ellie said, taking a moment to look at the buildings around us. A loud sound of a bomb went off as we climbed up more road parts. "Ahhh, what the hell was that?" Ellie asked. "You hear that Tess?" I said, keeping up with her. "Yeah. Sounded pretty far away, though" She replied. "Shit" I murmured, knowing we would probably come across whatever it was that exploded. "Are we safe?" Ellie spoke.
"For now" Tess replied. I had a brief look around the area for ammo before continuing, but there was nothing around. There were two ledges and then a pit several hundred feet down. "Damn. That's quite a drop" Ellie pointed out. I looked ahead, through the rain and saw the large, golden roofed building. "Well, there's the capitol building" I said, pointing it out. "Yeah, we need to get around this mess" Tess said. "This is the downtown area?"Asked Ellie. "It was. Now it's just a giant wasteland".
"Over here" I said, getting through a hole in a building. I jogged up some steps and to area with trees that weren't overgrown. "You find anything over there?" I asked Tess. "No". She replied. "Keep looking" I replied, knowing I probably wasn't going to find anything. "Should I do anything?" Ellie asked, as she pointlessly wondered around. "You just stay close to her for now" I told her. "Rodger dodger" She replied.
I picked up a brick, and stored it away in my backpack, keeping my pistol on hand. "Hey Tess" I called out, finding a building, "Comin'" She replied. It was the building I had seen before, the leaning one, I didn't know it was safe, but it was the only way out.
I went inside and the first thing I saw was a dead soldier. "He's been ripped apart" Tess acknowledged. "Body's pretty fresh" She continued. "Is that bad?" Ellie asked, as I examined the route ahead. "Yeah, might be... Let's not stick around".
I opened a door, searching for supplies, and I was lucky enough to find few screws a bolts which I kept in my backpack. We continued up the stairs, but the building, behind side-ways makes things very dis-orientated. As we went up there was another dead soldier which we all saw, he had a note next to him, so I picked it up.
