"Get ready"
David tells me as the screams of the infected get louder. I take my bow out and kill the first runner that comes through the hallway. But when two clickers come in I make sure to take them down with the rifle as I didn't want them to come anywhere close to me. "You hear that? They're on the roof!" I shout out to David. "I know!" He quickly replies. The ones on the roof drop down and I quickly throw a Molotov to hold a few of them back as I needed to help David with a clicker that was trying to bite him.
I have to heal myself quickly before I take another two out with my bow and arrow. "We're doin' fine kid" David says as the amount shorten down for a second, "Doesn't feel like it" I reply. "Just stay focused. We'll make it". I go down the hall to retrieve my arrows quickly, but I don't have long before I hear David shout "Here come more". "How many of these things are there?" I ask in disbelief. "I have no idea. Just keep at it". I stay in the corridor so that when more infected start to charge at me I simply place nail bombs that stop them in their paths.
Before we know it a bloater drops down from the ceiling. "It's a bloater!" I call out to let David know that it was there. "A what?" He asks. "One of those big fucking guys" I explain as I shoot down a clicker. As the bloater comes down the hallway that we are at, I throw a nail bomb in it's path and then shoot it once in the head with the rifle and the bloater falls to the ground, dead.
"The big guy's down!" I tell David. We take down a couple more runners before it all seems to just die down very quickly. I walk over to David who stares out a whole in the building where there use to be a window. "Listen" He says to me, I do. "No infected" I say, looking around, my ears weren't lying, there really were no infected. "No infected. What'd I tell ya?" He smiles and laughs. "Alright. Let's head on back, check on that buck of ours" David says, lighting hitting my arm.
We make our way back to the shelter and find that the deer was still there. "You handled yourself pretty nice back there" David says as we sit down. "Ha, whew. I'd say we make a pretty good team" He continues. "Psshh. We got lucky" I say, looking down at the small fire he was starting. "Lucky? No, no... No such thing as luck. No, you see I believe that everything happens for a reason". I wipe my nose and reply, "Sure". "I do. And I can prove it to you. Now, this winter has been especially cruel. A few weeks back, I ah... Sent a group of men out - nearby town to look for food. Only a few came back. They said that the others had ah, slaughtered by a crazy man. And get this, he's - a crazy man traveling with a little girl" He says, pointing at me with the stick he had been using to tend the fire with.
"You see? Everything happens for a reason". I quickly pick the rifle up and stand on my feet, the gun aimed at him. "Now don't get upset. It's not your fault. You're just a kid". I don't put the gun down, I didn't know what I was going to do. "James, lower the gun" He says. I look behind me and find David's friend James with a pistol aimed at my head. "No way, David. I'm not gonna let her go". "Lower the gun". This time James does as David says. "Now give her the medicine" David also orders.
"The others won't be happy about this" James says as he throws the medicine a few feet from where I was standing. "Yeah, well, that's not your concern" David tells him as I quickly pick up the medicine. "Move the fuck out of the way" I tell James. He slowly moves out the way at I back out of the shelter, keeping my eye on David and James. "You won't survive long out there. I can protect you" David tells me. "No thanks" I reply, shaking my head and running away. I follow the blood trail back to where Callus was. "Let's get outta here" I say, taking his rein's off the branch and riding off.
I get off Callus once i'm close to the house. I walk him into the garage and shut the shutter door. I place both hands of Callus and take a slow breath out. "Okay..." I say, heading downstairs. "Joel?" I ask as I look at his still body lying on a old mattress. I see him slowly breathe out. "Oh..." I say, relieved. "I only managed to get a little bit of food" I say to him as I place my backpack down. I open up the zip of my bag and take out the syringe and the medicine, "But... I did get this".
I place them on my backpack and move the covers off Joel. "Move your arm" I say. He does and I lift his shirt up where I see his wound which I had tried my best to stitch up. "Oh..." I say, seeing it looked red and sore. I put the medicine in the syringe and push the bubbles out the end. "Here we go" I say, putting the needle it his would. "Sorry" I say to him softly, I couldn't bare to see him in pain. "All done" I say, taking the needle out, "That's it". I put the syringe and medicine bottle to the side and put the covers back over him. I place my hand on his forehead and feel that he still had a bit of a fever. "You're gonna make it" I say, more for myself than for him.
I lay down and rest my head on my backpack. It was freezing cold, especially having no sort of blanket for myself. I put my hand on Joel, and look at him before I drift off to sleep.
I wake up to the sound of talking, i'm not startled until I hear the words 'find her'. I get up quickly and rush over to the window. I slowly move the rags out of the way and see three men right outside. "Oh, fuck. They tracked me" I say. I kneel over to Joel and say, "I'm gonna draw them away from here", knowing it was the only option. I could not let them know that Joel was even here. "I'll come back for you" I tell him as I put my backpack on and go up the stairs.
