"Follow me" Henry said, leading straight out of the room. "Sorry about the whole gun thing" Sam said to Ellie as she pulled her backpack onto her shoulder more. "Don't worry, I would've done the same thing. Where are you from?" Ellie asked. "All the way from Hartford" Sam replied as I checked the room for supplies. "Really? I heard some bad stuff going on down there". "Yeah, the military abandoned the zone. It's why we left. Place probably looks like this by now".
I move out of the room, there were no useful supplies at all. In the bathroom all the pill bottles were empty and the bullets were not for any of my guns. The only place with supplies was the kitchen, and that only had a few screws. I went on where they were waiting, in the hallway and continued to follow Henry. "We gotta be careful. We're right next to one of their lookout areas" Henry informed. The hallway was long, and all the rest of the doors were locked. "Is it just you and your daughter?" He asked, before I could say anything, Ellie said it for me, "We're not related, we're more like um...". "I promised someone I'd look after her" I finish off for her.
"Yeah, I can appreciate that" Henry says as we go down some stairs. Before I go down any more steps, I see a locked door and open it with a shiv I had in my backpack. In the kitchen there was a lot of supplies like, tape, alcohol, pills and some rifle ammo. In a child's room there was a comic sitting on a swivel chair. "Ellie! Think I found another one of them comics you been reading" I shout out to her as I pick it up. "Oh. I'll read that later". The comic was called Deep Phase, it was another one of the Savage Starlight collection.
On the boy's wall there was a range of different posters ranging from video games to movies. I exit the room and move onto what looked like the parents's room, there were pills, ammo and explosive material on the cupboard, I reckoned I could use the stuff to make a smoke or nail bomb.
I figured that there wasn't much left, so I carried on downstairs to where the others were. We led out to a hallway, there were more posters on the wall, this time they were bike related. After that the next room was a toy shop, 'Choo Choo Toys'. Henry was already in there, looking out of a window, "Wait, wait. Everyone be quiet" He said, holding his hand up. I could hear the rumble of the tank, "Get away from the windows". We ducked down as the tank drove past the building, it didn't stop at all, it hadn't seen us. Henry sighed, "They're gone". "Man... That fuckin' truck. It's been holding us ever since we got in this damn-", Henry stopped to look at his brother Sam. "Sam, what're you doing?" He asked as Sam held a toy robot in his hand.
"Nothing" Sam replied. "Get rid of it" Henry demanded, "My backpack is practically empty". "What's the rule about takin' stuff?" He asked, holding his index finger up. "It weighs like nothing" Sam argues. "The rule - What is it?". "We only take what we have to" Sam says, throwing it on the ground. "That's right. Now come on". I feel sort of bad for Sam, but I knew Henry was only trying to keep him safe. "How far is this place?" I ask. "We're close. Real close" Henry tells me.
The toy shop still had a lot of toys on the shelves, board games, stuffed toys and different coloured tricycles. There was even a colourful mat with letters on it still lying on the floor. As we went out through a metal door I saw more hunters, me and Henry indistinctly crouched down. "Shit. Ellie, watch our back" I say, planning for me and Henry to go ahead. "What'd you find?" A hunter asked. "Nothin'... Looks like someone was up there, but they're long gone". Henry could see the two men, "Sam stay with her" He told his brother.
"So where are the others?" One man asked. "They wanted to give it another once over. Make sure we didn't miss anything". "Alright... Keep an eye out over there, I'll check out this area". The men split up and take out there guns, cautious of where they step. I made a nail bomb quickly, whether or not I would have to use it. I knew there were at least two guys, but there was probably more. I went around the side and could see one of them coming towards where I was crouched, behind a box. Unfortunately for me, he doesn't come close enough for me to take him out, so I have to go to where the whole group is. I can now see that there is four of them. I take the nail bomb that I made and threw it, two of them back away, but the others took the impact of it.
I take the rest out with my gun, which only takes two bullets. "We did it. Not bad, old timer" Henry comments. I pick up four shells of ammo and look for Ellie, she was fine and hung back like she was told to. "Come on, up on this truck" He says, climbing onto it himself. I jump onto the truck and the two kids follow after me. As we get onto a rooftop two more men run across, I think they didn't see us, but I couldn't be sure, they both had their guns out. I figured that they didn't see me, so I took them both out with head shots. I reload my hunting rifle and then put it back.
We go across a plank to get to the next building, Henry is already there and waits beside some double doors. "Through this door" He says to me before I go any further. "And you sure it's safe, being so close to them?" I question. "I'm the only one with the key, man". "And where'd you get that?" I ask as I pick up a Firefly pendant. "I killed one of 'em. He won't miss it now". "So... How old are you?" Sam asks Ellie as they enter the room. "Me? Fourteen" Ellie says confidently,"How old are you?" She adds. "Ah... The same".
Henry butts in, "Oh you're fourteen, huh?". "I'm close" Sam says, a little annoyed. "Alright" Henry laughs. "I am" Sam demands. The room looks like some sort of call centre, computers in lines with abandoned chairs scattered around the place. "Here we are" Henry says, taking keys out of his pocket and opening a door with them. I head into the room after him, it seems like this was the office of the place.
"Welcome to my office" Henry says quite cheerfully. "How long have you guys been holed up in here?" Ellie asks curiously. "A few days" Sam replies, "We found a bit of food though. Here". Sam leads Ellie over to where they stored their food. "Blueberries. Found a whole stash of them. You want some?" Henry asks as I peer out the window. "No" I say. "Hey. mam, relax. We're safe" He says, seeing my tension. "So why haven't you left?". "Been waiting for the right opportunity". "And?" I ask, "Here". Henry leads me to a window around the other side, "Check this out". Outside there was a checkpoint, but it wasn't like the normal ones, instead of the soldiers running it, the hunters were.
"Look at these sons of bitches. Every day, they congregate down there. Guarding that damn bridge. Come night time, it's down to a skeleton crew. After sunset, that's our window. With most of them gone, sneak right past them". I think about his plan, "That could work" I admit. "Oh it'll work. It'll definitely work". Henry looks away from me as he hears a laugh, "Wow..." He murmurs. I look over, Ellie threw a blueberry in the air and it hit her nose, "Ow" She says, rubbing it. "A blueberry hurt you?" Sam asks, laughing.
"It's been awhile since that boy even cracked a smile" Henry tells me, "She doesn't seem bothered by all this". I'd like to say that Ellie was tough, very mature for her age, but instead I change the subject. "So where were you headin'?". We both sit down on high back swivel chairs. "Heard the Fireflies are based out west somewhere. We're gonna join up with them" He says. "Yeah..." I reply. "Something funny?" He asks, un-amused by my attitude. "Just seems like there's a lot of people putting their stock on the Fireflies these days" I say back to him, he's quick to defend. "Yeah, maybe there's a reason for that".
"So you don't know where they are and you're just gonna drag him across the country to find 'em?" I pointed out, "I tell you what, how about I worry about my brother and you worry about your girl?" He says sitting forwards. "Easy" I say, keeping my cool, "We're looking for the Fireflies too". Henry sits back, he seems quite embarrassed by the way he acted. He then looks at me for a second and takes some piece of paper out of his pocket and puts it on the table. When he unfolds it, it reveals a map with two circles on it, "This is us" He says, pointing at the smaller one. He then points at the second, larger circle, "There's an abandoned military radio station, just outside the city. Any survivors from our group they're supposed to meet us there -- tomorrow. You and your girl want to join us, it goes down tonight".
I sit back and put my hands on my knees, "I guess we best rest up then". Henry sits back as well and smiles, obviously glad about our agreement.
