Fall- Chapter Three- Part 6 Not Alone

I open some double doors which lead out to the doorway. I take my gas mask off and place it in my backpack before I open another do back outside. "Joel! Are you OK? What happened in there?" Ellie calls out to me. "More infected; I'm fine" I reassure her. "Here - Come open the gate". I run over and grab a generator, pushing it to where there was a loose power lead. I plug it in and then start the generator up. "Alright. Let's try the gate" I say. Ellie presses the green light and the gate starts to raise. 

"You did it!" Ellie points out, she gets onto Callus and leads him out. I get on as well and we start to ride on. "Those clickers - you think they were Fireflies?" Ellie asks. "No... No, I don't think so" I reply, even though I wasn't sure myself. "Why would they have infected so close to the lab?". I quickly think of a response, "Bill used them as a form of defence. Maybe they're doing the same". "Yeah... I could see that". We come into the area where the science lab is, "No guards. No nothing" Ellie says, taking the words out of my mouth. "Yeah... I'd expect to see someone by now" I admit. 

We ride around as there are large fences blocking the doors. "Have you ever been to one of these?" Ellie asks me. "What? A university" I reply. "Yeah". "No, not as a  student at least" I say with a laugh. "Why not?" Ellie asks curiously as we ride around to find an entrance. "Uhh... I had Sarah when I was pretty young" I admit. I get off the horse when I find a two large metal doors. "Oh... Were you married?". "For a while" I reply as I try to yank the gate open. "What happened?". I couldn't answer this, I wasn't ready yet so I just say, "OK". "Too much?" She asks, "Too much" I agree.

Ellie changes the subject quickly and points to something in the distance. "Hey. What about over there?" She asks. I look at where she is pointing at and see a giant hole in the building. "Yeah. That looks like a way in" I reply. I look around for something to help us get over the gate and I come across a large wheelie bin. I start to push it towards the gate and as I get to the hill down the bin becomes too heavy for me and i'm forced to let go. It crashes into the gate, smashing it open. "Alright. Not what I had in mind, but it'll do" I say, walking in through the gate.

I get hold of the bin again and push it towards a lorry which was just below the hole in the wall to the hospital.  I place it so that we can both climb up onto the lorry. I jump onto the ledge, into the building and then help Ellie up in as well. "Let's look around" Ellie says, taking the lead. I go a different way to Ellie, I trusted her and I was pretty sure that no one else was here. "Hello?" I can hear Ellie shout out. I pick up a few scarps up as we go along, I even find 25 parts which I would use later for my guns.

We reach a balcony and Ellie starts to take lead again. "Yoohoo! Fireflies? Cure for mankind over here! Anyone?". I shake my head, "Let's keep it down until we figure out what's going on". Ellie starts to look through some files and so do I. "Nothing useful" She says, standing back up. "Ain't nothin' here but a bunch of medical mumbo-jumbo" I agree.

Ellie sighs, "I don't get it". "Looks like they all just packed up and left in a hurry" I suggest. Suddenly there's a crashing sound upstairs. "Maybe not all of 'em" Ellie says enthusiastically. "Stay close" I tell her, even if it was a Firefly they either didn't know we were here or didn't know who we were yet. I turn my light off and jog up the stairs, Ellie was where I could see her, but she was still always one step ahead of me.

We go around the balcony and through another door which Ellie opens for me. "There are no bodies. That's good, right?" Ellie asks as we go through into another corridor with small rooms with science equipment like buns n burners. "If we find out where they went" I reply to her. I take some tape and so ammo for my El Diablo as we push on. As we walk forwards something is knocked over behind us. "Shit!" I say, quickly reaching for my bow and arrow. I look behind me and see nothing, but I keep a weapon close. We go through a corridor which is covered with a white sheet and a bright light which was still on. 

We enter another small lab where on the table I find an x-ray sheet. I look at it and find that the x-ray was of an infected person. It clearly showed the fungal growth on the patient's brain. It made me wonder what exactly there were doing to try and find cure. 

As I go into the next room I stop in caution as I hear a screeching sound. I open it some more and clearly see a group of monkeys in the room. When they see me they quickly run off into a different room. "Well, at least it ain't clickers" I say, "Yeah" Ellie replies, kicking a bin that one of the monkeys had knocked over, "No Fireflies either" She adds. "Well" She says turning around to me, "Maybe in all that research they turned into fucking monkeys". 

I smirk, "Just keep searching, we'll find something". When looking over the tables I find a lab recorder. I press play and listen to what is said.

I can hear monkeys in the background all the way through.

"That's four palettes of lab equipment all packed up and
ready to go.   Now - big question is what do we do with
all you guys. They say the tainted batch needs to be put
down. You know what I say? I say screw that. Who
made a bigger sacrifice than you, right? If anyone
deserves to run free out there it's-- Hey, easy. Agh...
Shit. Oh no. It bit me. Oh my god...".

"I'm sure glad we didn't mess with them monkeys" I say when the recorder finishes. "He didn't say where they went" Ellie adds. "I know. Let's just keep looking" I say, trying to keep her in a happier mood. I check all the drawers for more information, but all I find is more and more supplies. I go to the next door I find which is blocked with same kind of furniture. I put my shoulder on it and use my strength to push it open.

As soon as I walk in I can see the skeleton of a man sitting on a seat. He had a hole in his skull, he must have shot himself. On the table near the skeleton there was another lab recorder.

"If you're looking for the Fireflies, they've all left"

"Yeah, no shit" Ellie butts in.

"I'm dead" It continues. "Or I will be soon. Got me some time to reflect".

I sigh and quickly fast forward the tape. "... been years that felt like we were..."

I fast forward it again.

"...fucking thing was a giant waste of ti-"

And again.

"... not gonna do this anymore...".

Ellie sighs, "Come on..." I say, fast forwarding it for the last time.

"... looking for the others, they've all returned to Saint Mary's Hospital in Salt Lake City. You'll find them there. Still trying to save the world. Good luck with that".

"Do you know where that is?" Ellie asks, looking at me. "I know the city" I tell her. "Is it far?". "It ain't close. I mean on horseback-". I stop and look out the window. "What?" Ellie asks". There were people, people with flashlights outside. "Fireflies?" Ellie asks. Suddenly the light is shone on us, "Get down!" I shout, pulling me and Ellie down as a bullet flies through the window.
