We start moving on slowly. "Now, the safety's on. Do you know how to switch it off?" I ask her. "I do" She replies confidently. "Okay, you just... You gotta respect it. This is not-" Ellie cuts me off, "Joel. I'll be careful". "Okay". I was quite proud of Ellie, if I was her I probably would have panicked a lot more. We went around the block to where there was another shutter door. I knelt down and started to pull it up, "Alright, do your thing, Ellie" I tell her when it is half open. Ellie ducks under the metal door and goes to the chain, "Come on" She says, trying to pull at it. "Stupid chain is stuck" She tells me, leaving the chain.
I complain slightly, due to the heaviness of the door, "Hold on" Ellie says as she pushes a cleaning trolley under the door. "There". I let go of the door and it falls onto the trolley, holding it open for me to get under. "That's good thinkin'" I tell her, trying to keep the mood as it was now, happy. I pick up some screws and then a clean rag and some alcohol. I look at everything I have and quickly make a health kit, seeing as I had the right stuff for it. Ellie looks at the open space where there use to be a window and says, "How about you get me up there". I knew that would work, but it wasn't the easier option. I go back to the trolley and hold the handles, "Help me open this" I say. Ellie pulls the shutter door up, and I take the trolley out. She quickly has to let go of it as it was too heavy for her.
I wheeled the trolley over to where Ellie had pointed out before. I jump up on it first, and then over to see if there was anyone, I saw that there wasn't, before I could call Ellie over she was already by my side. I saw another work bench and set my backpack down on it. I didn't have enough parts for any holsters, but I did have enough to make the reload speed on my hunting rifle better. I decided i wouldn't use my parts for anything else at this moment of time, instead I would save them.
I put everything back into my backpack and but it back onto my back. As I jumped over a table, someone outside shouted "Run". "Oh shit. Get down. Get down" I told Ellie. We both ducked down under the windows. "Keep running". There was a man and a woman running from one of the large tank. It shot down the man first and then the woman, "What do we do?" Ellie whispered, starting to get up. "Nothing" I reply, pushing her shoulder back down. Two men jumped out of the truck and shot the woman dead. "Busy couple a days, huh?" One asked. "Whatever, man" The other replied.
The man searched the woman's body, "Damn. No food. Old pair of shoes. They got nothin'". The men jumped back into the tank, I hadn't noticed until now that the tank had a dead body on the front, clearly showing other what they were willing to do. They quickly drove off, leaving the dead bodies. "Oh man.." Ellie said, standing up. "There ain't nothin' we coulda done" I tell her. "I know" She replies, "It's just... Oh man". Ellie sighs and looks out the window once again before turning to face me. "Let's just get to that bridge" I murmur.
We exit the room and go up a few flights of stairs, as soon as I entered the room I could hear more hunters. "Well at least they finally killed that couple. I was sure they made it out of the city". As I crouched to the corner of the wall I could see two of them. "Now all we need to find this fucking pick-up truck duo". I went into a different room as they came closer. "There better've been an army in that truck. How the fuck did they wipe out the entire crew over there?". "Let's keep searching. I wanna wrap this up before sundown".
"Hearing them talk - at least they're scared of us" Ellie said. I led one of the men downstairs and strangled him when he was down. After he was dead I went back upstairs, on the way up I took my shot gun out and reloaded it as the man was already on the stairs. He shot first, but he missed so I shot him twice in the head, and he was down. We move into an office and I check all the drawers, but there was no ammo, and on some of my guns I was running out on it.
The way out was a hole through the floor which led onto stacks of metal and then onto a car. When we go around the corner I can hear talking, "Just got word from the east side crew... They ain't seen shit". I could clearly see a man in a building across the street from where I was. "What about Market Street?" This voice came from someone else, there was definitely two of them in the building. "Yeah, they're driving through that area now. Who knows, maybe they'll flush 'em out". "I pray to god these tourists show their faces". "Fuck, they gotta show up somewhere... I think this'll be your lucky day".
"Stay low" I tell Ellie, taking my hunting rifle out. I hold it steady and aim for the man's head, it's a long shot, but I make it, he falls on the floor and it seems like his friend notices. "Behind you!" Ellie suddenly shouts, she quickly shots him in the stomach, and I run back so I can aim at him. I quickly do so and shoot him dead. I quickly go into the building where I had shot the first guy, and go slowly up the stairs as I can hear someone else up there. I take a stealth approach to him, quickly grabbing his neck and strangling him. I searched his body, but he only had alcohol, and so did his dead friend.
Another hunter runs into his room and looks shocked when he sees the dead men. I take my chance and use my pipe to hit his head and then the scissors stab into his neck. We headed back down and I realized that I only had three shotgun shells left, but up close shots would last a while.
From what I can see, there is only two men left. I take the closest one to me down first and then I shoot another as he searches one of the bodies. "Oh man. Endure and survive" Ellie says, putting her gun away. "What? Oh right... The comic book thing" I say, wrapping a few cuts in bandages. Around the next corner there are a couple more dead soldiers piled up together. I go into a building to look for supplies when I find a note:
We finished scouring the city for any survivors.
There were a handful of soldiers hiding in the
hotel - we took care of them.
A bunch of us raided their stockade - or what
was left of it. Most of the big machines got
fucked up in the fighting. We won't be riding on
a tank any time soon. Likewise none of the
heavy artillery is salvageable. The one exception
is the humvee. We've managed to repair it -
including the 50-cal mounted gun. This thing is
impenetrable. I'd like to see someone fuck with
us now.
I put the note back from where I found it and took some supplies from some shelves. I quickly looked through all my stuff and made a quick health kit as I had enough for it. And I also made another nail bomb. There was another door which was locked, so I used one of my shivs to open it. Inside was a lot more supplies, tape, rags, pills and some ammo.
